It appears almost futuristic yet timeless, with sleek lines and a
low, road-hugging stance that affords it great agility. Yes, this
1990 BMW 850i is quite a looker. Its distinctive appearance is
amplified by darkly tinted glass, a set of very sharp 18" black
spoked factory wheels, a low-rise spoiler and an aggressive-looking
front end outfitted with pop-up headlights to illuminate the path
ahead. And, as you'd rightfully expect from a BMW, the performance
is there, too. After all, when you brand your products, "ultimate
driving machines", you're setting the bar pretty high and this
well-equipped luxury performance coupe sails over that bar with no
problem at all.
Its black leather interior remains in its original configuration
and has obviously been treated with respect over the years, judging
from its surprisingly fresh condition. The contoured front bucket
seats show only minimal wear, the rear bench even less, and as you
direct your attention forward, you'll notice no cracks or warping
on the dash, which is always a welcome sight in a car with UV
sensitive black upholstery. Even some 35-plus years ago, BMW wasn't
stingy on comfort and convenience options, so you'll find power
windows, a power tilt column, power heated seats, power mirrors,
cruise control, sunroof, dual zone climate control, a dimming
review mirror and more standing by. There's even a navigation
system on board! That's certainly not something you see very often
in a car from this era.
This seldom seen German import is powered by an electronically
fuel-injected 5.0-liter V12 engine that's in fine running form. It
sits in a well-maintained compartment, surrounded by properly
routed wiring and fresh-looking hoses and it fires up with no
hesitation, idles smoothly and offers strong performance, pairing
with a 4-speed automatic transmission to form a rock-solid
drivetrain. Smooth, precise power steering makes for easy
navigation and, with its wide, low-slung stance combined with a
coilover suspension, this 850 really handles nicely, as indicated
by the impressive .88g skidpad rating it pulled when it was first
introduced. Its four-wheel power disc brakes feature sizable,
vented rotors for excellent heat dissipation, and bring it to quick
stops with no fanfare.
