The GTO remains one of the most popular muscle cars of all time and
most folks say it introduced the 'muscle car' era. GTOs had big
V-8s, hood scoops and dual exhaust. The name GTO was borrowed from
the Italians (Gran Turismo Omologato) and implied that the car was
'eligible' to be entered in road races like LeMans. This
translation left little doubt that the GTO was created by GM with
racing in mind.
Careful Partial Restoration-
This 1966 GTO convertible was the beneficiary of a careful partial
restoration. The exterior has been refinished in Tuxedo black with
distinctive red pin stripping. It is equipped with a new white
convertible top and factory 14" Pontiac 'rally wheels' with
centers/trim rings that mount Hankook performance radial tires. The
original Burgundy Red vinyl bucket seat interior is in overall fair
condition. This classic GTO is equipped with a custom tilt wheel,
center console w/shifter, Rally gauge package and tinted
windshield. The dash holds an AM/FM sound system with power antenna
(needs TLC).
Pontiac 389ci Tri-power with Turbo-Hydramatic-
Horsepower is furnished by what is stated to be a Pontiac 389ci V8
engine. It is equipped with a tri-power 3x2 intake with Rochester
carbs. We do not have a complete history of the engine, but it
looks and sounds like an original tri-power motor. The 389 is
backed by a GM 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission. The clean
chassis is equipped with power steering and 4-wheel power drum
brakes.
