Finished in striking factory code 900 Tuxedo Black with a bold 875
Red interior, this beautifully preserved 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS
Sport Coupe represents one of the most iconic full-size performance
luxury cars of the early 1960s. Garage-kept from new and showing
just 69,421 miles, this Impala has benefited from exceptional
long-term stewardship and a truly remarkable ownership history.
Introduced in 1958, the Impala quickly rose to become Chevrolet's
flagship full-size model, blending style, comfort, and performance
in a way that captured the optimism of post-war America. By the
early 1960s, the Impala was Chevrolet's best-selling model, and in
1961 Chevrolet introduced the Super Sport (SS) package, initially
as a limited-production performance trim. By 1962, the SS option
had evolved into a well-defined performance-luxury package
featuring distinctive trim, sportier interior appointments, and
available V8 power, cementing the Impala SS as a cultural and
automotive icon.
This example is powered by its numbers-matching 283ci V8 with a
Rochester 2-Jet carburetor, paired with a smooth Powerglide
automatic transmission, delivering the effortless cruising
character these cars are celebrated for. Factory equipment includes
bucket seats with a locking center console, factory air
conditioning, power steering, windshield washer system, AM
transistor radio, full wheel covers with three-blade spinner caps,
and 1-inch whitewall tires, all contributing to a correct and
period-authentic presentation.
Equally compelling is this Impala's story. Purchased new in 1962,
it remained with the original family for nearly five decades, used
primarily as a summer car at their seasonal home in Petoskey,
Michigan. During the off-season, it was stored in an airport hangar
at Harbor Springs, emerging each year for use from June through
September. We believe the car was professionally repainted sometime
in the early 1990's. Following the passing of the family
patriarchs, the car was included in the estate and sold along with
the Michigan property around 2011. The second owner continued the
tradition, maintaining and enjoying the car at the same location
before relocating it to St. Louis, Missouri in 2021. Later that
year, it was sold to a particularly fitting third caretaker, the
original owner's airplane pilot, who had loaded and unloaded the
family's luggage into the Impala's trunk during summers in the
1980s. Each of the three owners shared a deeply personal connection
to this unique car.
Mechanically, the Impala has been recently serviced in December
2025, including a new intake manifold gasket, rebuilt Rochester
carburetor with a new choke tube, new valve cover gaskets, fresh
drive belts, engine oil and filter, coolant system flush with new
thermostat and temperature sending unit, brake cleaning and
adjustment, and a resealed air-conditioning system converted to
R134a refrigerant. Sensible updates include the addition of front
and rear seatbelts and a conversion from the original generator to
a modern alternator, improving reliability while retaining a stock
appearance. Of note, while the car was parked in storage, the hood
had approximately 4 areas where bird droppings stayed too long
resulting in some lifting of the paint finish.
With its elegant color combination, documented long-term care,
fascinating provenance, and recent mechanical attention, this 1962
Chevrolet Impala SS Sport Coupe stands as a rare opportunity to
acquire a well-preserved and authentically presented example of one
of Chevrolet's most celebrated models-equally suited for shows,
touring, or continued careful enjoyment.
