A veritable rolling time capsule piece that's chock full of
mid-'70s style, this 1976 Cadillac Coupe DeVille is one seriously
cool classic. Measuring more than 19 feet in length and rolling on
a 130-inch wheelbase, it ushered in the final year of GM's "Big
Car" era and is the absolute epitome of a land yacht, in the very
best sense. With its elaborate front grille, unmistakable hood
ornament, wire wheel center caps and padded white vinyl top, you
can be sure all eyes will be focused on this ride, wherever it
goes. It's still wearing its factory Firethorn Red color both
inside and out, and while you can see some evidence of its years of
service, whether you choose to drive it in its perfectly
presentable present state or take the necessary steps to bring it
back to top form, its overall curb appeal is pretty tough to
match.
Climb in and lower yourself into the front bench seat and you'll
notice a big benefit of this Cadillac's substantial dimensions. To
say that this is merely a roomy interior would be doing it a
disservice. It's as spacious as they come, with two broad rows of
seating, and abundant leg and shoulder room for you and your
passengers to ride in absolute comfort. Its level of functionality
is also pretty impressive. The factory air conditioning blows cold
and strong, the gauges are unusually clear and display their
readings without a hitch and the comfort and convenience options,
including power seats, power windows and door locks, and cruise
control, are in good working order. The factory radio still holds
its position at the center of the dash and is joined by an
aftermarket AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth connectivity to provide
plenty of audio choices.
This high-impact classic offers an unforgettable experience behind
the wheel. With its lengthy wheelbase, it floats down the road
smoothly and its expansive 500-cubic-inch V8, fed by a four-barrel
carburetor, propels it with power to spare. The accompanying
3-speed automatic TH400 is also in good form and shifts with
slip-free precision. There's surprisingly little play in its power
steering, and power brakes that include discs up front bring this
lengthy ride to a prompt stop with no problem at all. A number of
mechanical components were also replaced to position this Caddy for
plenty of future fun-filled miles, including the power steering
pump, water pump, muffler and resonator.
