"By now you know the 1992 Buick Riviera is a head turner. Its sleek
exterior is complemented by a luxurious interior that features
amenities like a 6 way power seat and automatic climate control as
standard. Beautiful! But, now meet the beauty underneath. Antilock
braking provides security. The 3800 V6 with 4-speed electronically
controlled automatic transmission ensures a smooth, powerful ride.
You are surrounded by 2 sided, rust resistant steel panels,
galvanized with zinc inside and out, that ensures lasting value."
From the 1992 Buick brochure.
For consignment, a 1992 Buick Riviera Prestige Package SE with a
title verified 61,844 actual miles. Owned by our consignor for more
than 20 years, this example presents in two tone coverage and a
landau style vinyl roof.
Exterior
Coming out of the 80's meant rounder body lines and components that
were flush with those lines and this 1992 demonstrates the trend
with composite headlights replacing dual sealed beam style units
that usually sat recessed in bezels. The tail lights too are now
part of the latch panel instead of cutting into it and there are no
right angles to be found anywhere as both the front fascia and
decklid slope downward. This '92 features two stage Pewter Gray
Metallic over Silver Metallic on the lower third, delineated with a
broad band of polished molding which is contiguous and becomes
accenting for front and rear bumpers. 15-inch wheels have wire
wheel covers and 70 series tires with an early 2023 date code.
Imperfections include cracking throughout the vinyl landau, a rock
chip on the windshield, some minor blistering at a wheel opening,
and a scuff on lower edge of rear valance.
Interior
Sporty elegance is how we'd describe the interior beginning with
the well appointed door panels with pleated insert, plastic
woodgrain faceplates, integrated courtesy lights, and carpeted
lower, and both present nicely. The bucket seats are broad,
constructed of stitched gray leather with some light compression
and wear on the driver's side, but shotgun rider and rear occupants
enjoy robust and clean seating. Modern for '92 is the digital dash,
surrounded in simulated burlwood, and when power is off, appears as
a clean black screen. Hit the power and dash lights up like a
Christmas tree and it will look familiar for denizens of 80's
arcades. A push button climate panel and familiar Delco
AM/FM/Cassette radio is integrated into the center stack and we
follow the wood down to the center console where the shifter
resides with some lights on the slide panel. A spring loaded coin
holder, convenient for paying tolls, is in the console, a sign of
the times and a nice throwback. Gray carpet below, a slightly lumpy
foam backed headliner above, and a trunk finished in gray cloth
panels completes our tour of the inside.
Drivetrain
Buick's venerable 3.8 liter V6 is on board, transverse mounted and
putting out 170 fuel injected horsepower. It's mated to a TH440
4-speed automatic transmission with power being routed through 2.84
gears up front. The bay presents in clean, driver quality
condition.
Undercarriage
Road spray, some surface rust, and typical metal oxidation is
present underneath where things are otherwise clean. Power disc
brakes occupy front and rear and so does independent suspension,
with Macpherson struts in front and transflex monoleaf spring in
back. A single exhaust runs through the original muffler, exiting
through a cut out in the rear apron.
Drive-Ability
Like a compact luxury cruiser, this Buick provides a comfortable
and manageable interior and the reliable V6 delivers decent power.
The ride is satisfying too with straight tracking, fine handling
and braking on demand. We note the service A/C light is on and the
driver's power lock switch does not unlock the doors. Beyond that,
all functions on the colorful dash and beyond operate as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
The Prestige Package included power seats, heated mirrors, twilight
sentinel headlights, and a number of other conveniences. If you
wanted a Cadillac without the outward boastfulness, this Buick was
the antidote. All these years later, the Riv is still a great car
and one that can be enjoyed daily!
