Gateway Classic Cars of San Antonio/Austin is proud to present this
1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS, finished in Ember Red over an
Ivory interior. As a first-year Chevelle, this Malibu SS represents
the beginning of a nameplate that would become one of Chevrolet's
most recognizable performance cars of the muscle-car era.
Under the hood is a 327 CID V8 paired with a 4-speed manual
transmission. This Chevelle was built to recreate Chevrolet's
little-known 1964 L76 Super Sport concept, using the
Corvette-derived 365-horsepower L76 327 as its inspiration. The
accompanying magazine feature describes the car as having been
recreated as closely as possible to the proposed factory
specifications, including the K66 transistorized ignition system.

The L76 itself was an impressive small-block for the era. Period
specifications included 11.0:1 compression, a special-performance
mechanical camshaft, special four-barrel carburetion, dual exhaust,
and a factory rating of 365 horsepower at 6,200 RPM.

What makes the story particularly interesting is that Chevrolet
planned to offer the L76 in the 1964 Chevelle, but the option was
ultimately cancelled before reaching normal full-scale production.
The accompanying feature discusses the engineering and production
issues surrounding the program and notes that only a handful of
possible examples have ever been reported. This Chevelle was
created as a representation of what that rarely seen combination
could have looked like had the program continued.

The Ember Red exterior is complemented by bright chrome trim, Super
Sport badging, and period-style wheel covers. Inside, the Ivory
bucket-seat interior carries the classic early Chevelle appearance,
with a center console and factory-style tach and gauge package
adding to the performance-oriented presentation shown in the
accompanying feature. image10-20-2026-122525
Power steering adds convenience, while the 4-speed manual keeps the
driving experience appropriately involved. An AM radio with rear
antenna and seatbelts round out the equipment.
Adding another layer to its story, this Chevelle is accompanied by
vintage magazine material featuring the car and detailing the
history behind Chevrolet's proposed L76-powered 1964 Chevelle. The
articles provide an unusual look at both the car and the
little-known performance combination it was built to represent.
