This 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 is a gorgeous, frame-off
restored truck with tasteful customizations and upgrades. On the
heels of the conclusion of World War II, Japanese auto manufacturer
Toyota identified the need and market opportunity of a
Japanese-domestic version of the American Jeep and the British Land
Rover; that is, a light-duty, short-wheelbase, 4x4 that was
sufficiently robust and agile to tackle the most challenging
terrains. As the years progressed, so did the design, construction,
and even the name (becoming the Land Cruiser) as did the ways
customers were using these vehicles. Interestingly, the Land
Cruiser nameplate is rumored to have been inspired by the Land
Rover. Introduced to the global market in the early 1960s, the FJ40
was Toyota's answer to the world's most demanding
terrain-engineered with military-grade durability, simple
mechanicals, a focus on reliability over luxury, and an
unmistakable imported look that rivaled its American competitors
(the Ford Bronco, Chevy Blazer, GMC Jimmy, and International Scout)
as well as the similarly-named British-made Land Rover. By the late
1970s, the Land Cruiser had already proven itself on virtually
every continent, from remote worksites and rugged trails to farms,
expeditions, and daily duty in some of the harshest environments
imaginable. The 1978 model year represents one of the most
desirable eras of the FJ40, benefiting from nearly two decades of
refinement while retaining the raw, utilitarian character that made
the Land Cruiser famous. Powered by Toyota's legendary 2F
inline-six and backed by a stout 4x4 drivetrain, the FJ40 delivered
unmatched longevity and off-road capability at a time when few
vehicles could keep pace. Today, these late-production FJ40s are
celebrated not only for their iconic design and rugged charm, but
also for their role in cementing Toyota's global reputation for
durability-making the 1978 Land Cruiser FJ40 a true cornerstone of
4x4 history. Recently, the FJ40 has become a popular
collector-grade, enthusiast vehicle with the wide availability of
upgrades and customizations, inside and out, and on top and
underneath. This particular customized FJ40 comes to us from a
southern-based enthusiast who imported the truck after its
comprehensive recent Frame-Off restoration that was undertaken
abroad. Under the hood of this FJ40 is a gas-powered 4.2 Liter
Inline 6 cylinder engine fed by a single 2 barrel carburetor that
together were said to have produced 125 horsepower when new. The
4.2L inline 6 is backed by a 4 speed manual transmission that is
shifted via a floor-mounted shifter, making this Toyota of charming
truck to take on a cruise. Power is sent from this Toyota's power
plant and transmission to a shiftable 2-speed 4x4 transfer case
that allows you to easily switch between a more efficient 2 wheel
drive setup to 4 wheel drive for improved traction when needed.
This '78 Toyota FJ40 comes outfitted with several fantastic
features and upgrades! Power steering is welcome addition to this
classic imported truck since it makes maneuvering in and out of
tight parking spaces a total breeze. Further assisting with parking
efforts are a pair of outside mirrors and a backup camera so that
you can easily see alongside of this wonderful truck. With power
front disc brakes and a dual master cylinder, bringing this Land
Cruiser to a complete stop is also an easy operation and provides
for more reliable braking as well. Riding on a set of 275/70R17
BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires mounted on upgraded 17 inch black
wheels, this 1978 Land Cruiser has fantastic curb appeal. To
account for the beefier wheel and tire setup, this Toyota Land
Cruiser's suspension has been upgraded with a lift kit that give
the truck a fantastic stance. Additionally, a rear-mounted spare is
included should you need to change a tire in the backwoods. Driving
at night or another low-light situation is a much improved since
this FJ has been upgraded with LED headlights along with a pair of
auxiliary LED trail lights. The black vinyl soft top is in great
shape as well, adding the charming look of this Toyota. The body of
this 1978 Land Cruiser has been refinished in beautiful Capri Blue
paint that completes the exterior appearance of this truck. The
interior of this 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 is absolutely
stunning! The front bucket seats and rear bench seat have been
restored with gorgeous black diamond-stitch upholstery. The
matching door panels, center console, and steering wheel are all in
great shape too while retaining a charming stock appearance. The
instrument cluster is fully featured, equipped with a 160 MPH
speedometer, amp gauge, temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge and
fuel gauge, along with indicator lights for high-beams and turn
signals. The interior also sports several desirable upgrades!
You'll be able to listen to all of your tunes while cruising or
off-roading thanks to the upgraded touch-screen Alpine
AM/FM/USB/Bluetooth infotainment system that blasts music through
numerous speakers and a beefy subwoofer. You'll also be able to
stay cool even on the hottest summer days (and warm on the
occasional cool evening) thanks to the upgraded modern R134a air
conditioning and heating system. Whether you're buying your very
first classic truck or you're adding to an existing collection of
imports, this 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 would make an excellent
choice. Give Ellingson's a call today at 763-428-7337!
