The final year of any car tends to be a special occasion, but 1965
marked the end of Porsche's 356 line of cars to make way for the
newly-announced Porsche 911. While many might find this as a sad
point, many would differ and say that the Porsche 356 had created a
long lineage of sports cars that spanned over the course of 17
years, with countless variants produced and races won. 1965 brought
the most refined 356, with Porsche learning different tricks and
updates over the many years that resulted in one of the best
driving variants of the 356. With the best performance coming from
a factory 356 via an upgraded transmission, disc brakes, and all of
the refinements and improvements over the entire production run,
made a 356SC drive at a level that defies its age.
According to the copy of Porsche's Kardex for 219461, this 1965
Porsche 356SC was rolled off the assembly line in Zuffenhausen,
Germany on August 21st, 1964. Spec'd in Ruby Red with a black vinyl
interior, as well as optional chrome wheels, it was delivered to
Porsche Northwest in Portland, Oregon on November 30th, 1964.
A meticulous restoration was performed on the car and carried out
by a number of 356 experts that ensured the authenticity of the
restoration was sound. The 356 was an all-original West Coast car,
taken care of its entire life and was an excellent foundation for a
complete concours-level restoration. A noted 356 restorer carried
out all of the paint and body work, ensuring that every surface was
as perfect as when the 356 left Zuffenhausen, giving the 356 a
concours-level Ruby Red paint finish. Tim Goodrich of Grants Pass,
Oregon, who was considered one of the best 356 specialists, rebuilt
the matching numbers engine for optimal performance.
For the first 47 years only 3 owners, all West Coast based, kept
and drove the car. Keeping the car in beautiful condition, the car
first arrived at Canepa in 2012. Complete with a Porsche Kardex, it
was confirmed that the car not only retained its original color
specification of Ruby Red over black vinyl, but also retained its
matching SC engine and transmission. It didn't take long for the
car to find a new caretaker, a senior executive of the Penske
corporation, where the car remained with them for the past 13 years
and adding a few miles since.
Now with just 71,325 original miles since delivery, the car was put
through the "Canepa Difference" process to ensure that everything
about the 356 was in excellent working order and condition, with
the matching-numbers engine and transmission in strong working
order. Mechanically the car was inspected from front to back and
put through a road test, revealing that it was in excellent shape.
Cosmetically the car was given a complete concours-level detailing,
including hand washing the underside of the car along with a
foam-pad polish of the Ruby Red paint. The interior was treated to
an equal amount of attention to detail, ensuring all surfaces were
pristine, cleaned, and restored as needed. The 1965 Porsche 356SC
now presents as an even better version of when it left Canepa,
pristine cosmetically and mechanically strong, ready for any roads
or shows thrown at it.
Included in the sale of this 1965 Porsche 356SC is the car's
original owner's manual, a copy of the Porsche Kardex, tools, jack,
and its spare wheel and tire. Ready for its next caretaker to take
the reins of this final production year Porsche 356, it is a car
that was not only restored with care but, with just 4 caretakers
over 61 years, is a car that has been enjoyed thoroughly.
