The first of BMW's Z-Series sports cars, the Z1 showcased BMW's technical and engineering know-how in a sensationally good-looking body. One of the first BMWs to feature a multi-link suspension, the Z1 introduced the "Z-Axle", which was later used in the E36 3 Series, amongst others. The only available drivetrain was a 2.5L Inline-6 producing 168hp with a five-speed manual, allowing the car to accelerate to 60mph in 7.8 seconds. However, straight line performance came secondary to handling feel, which the car delivered in spades.
Of course, the most memorable and iconic feature of the Z1 are its vertically retracting doors. Operated electrically, either by the door's locking mechanism on the exterior or via a traditional handle inside, the Z1's doors create high sills for exceptional crash protection. In fact, in jurisdications where it is legal, the car is safe to be driven with both doors retracted. As the Z1 was only produced in limited quantities from 1989 and 1991 and never imported into the US, they provide exceptional investment potential for collectors on our shores.
