This 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle is an excellent representation of a
true-blue American muscle car, presented as a highly desirable SS
model. While we do not have the original build sheet to
definitively confirm its factory SS status, the car carries all the
hallmarks of a genuine Super Sport and full factory-style SS
equipment. Originally leaving the Kansas City plant in Garnet Red
(Paint 52 E), it now features a menacing black-on-black look
powered by a 402 CI Big Block V8. For the enthusiast looking for an
SS that is ready to hit the road today while offering room for
light cosmetic improvement, this Chevelle is a standout.
Exterior
The car wears the full SS treatment with pride, featuring the
iconic dual cowl hood and complete SS badging. The body is
predominantly original metal, with the exception of the left rear
quarter which was sectioned rather than replaced. The frame is nice
and solid, and the pinch welds look good throughout. While there is
some "normal" rust visible in the body-as expected with an honest,
unrestored driver-it provides a very strong foundation. The car has
a fantastic stance and presents as a tough, Big Block machine.
Interior
Inside, the cabin has been upgraded from its original parchment
bench to Black Strato bucket seats. A TH350 transmission is
controlled by a floor-mounted ratchet shifter, though the dash
still retains the original column-shift selector window-a detail
the previous owner noted often points to the original SS
configuration. The interior is clean and functional, offering a
"driver-grade" experience that is ready to be enjoyed
immediately.
Underhood & Underbody
Under the hood sits a powerful 402 CI V8 (Casting 3999290) that
makes great power and sounds exactly like a Big Block Chevy should.
It is equipped with Power Steering and Power Disc Front Brakes,
making it much more manageable on the road than many of its
contemporaries. The power is sent to a 10-bolt Posi-traction rear
end (Suffix ACC) with 3.08 gears, a perfect setup for both
stoplight pulls and highway cruising. The solid frame is a major
selling point here, providing a sturdy, reliable backbone for this
muscle car.
Driving
This Chevelle runs, drives, and stops nicely. The 402 V8 is healthy
and responsive, and the TH350 shifts through the gears without
issue. It is a confident runner that makes plenty of power. As with
most classic projects, it could use some minor
"dialing-in"-specifically, the brakes feel a little soft and would
likely benefit from a bleed or adjustment. However, it is a fully
functional driver that you can take to the local cruise-in
tonight.
Conclusion
This '69 Chevelle offers the look, the sound, and the power of a
true Big Block SS. With its factory Garnet Red heritage, solid
frame, and 402 V8, the heavy lifting has already been done. We've
been transparent about the rust and the lack of a build sheet, but
the car speaks for itself on the road. Please note: We only have
what is seen in the photos and video; we encourage you to review
them thoroughly to see the honest condition of this SS.
