You really don't see too many classic Cougars on the road these
days to begin with, and the chances of you coming across any with
the singular curb appeal of this 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 are
downright slim. Dressed in high-impact silver paint that's paired
with color-matched bumpers and a custom hood scoop, this is a ride
that demands attention, blending some nice visual modifications
that set it apart from the crowd, but while still leaving its
vintage identity intact. It's got a great stance, with just a
slight incline to confer the aftermarket attention that's been put
into it, and a set of very clean 17" Billet Specialties wheels add
the perfect finishing touch.
The customized interior must be seen in person to be fully
appreciated. A pair of low-backed bucket seats, clad in black
vinyl, straddle a custom center console that blends perfectly with
its surroundings and places the tastefully modified shift lever
within easy reach. Up front, a Grant GT steering wheel is perched
on the tilting column and the dash area beyond it has been
thoroughly reimagined, now featuring striking carbon fiber trim,
with a full collection of white-faced Auto Meter gauges in the
instrument cluster to keep tabs on motoring functions. Those
aftermarket gauges are encircled by gold bezels that provide a
great contrast with the rest of the dash. At the center, an Alpine
AM/FM stereo with an auxiliary port and Bluetooth connectivity
stands by to tend to your audio requests.
This Ford classic is a very strong driver. Powered by a
302-cubic-inch V8 that's fed by a 4-barrel Holley Double Pumper
carburetor sitting on top of an Edelbrock intake manifold, it has
plenty of power, starts up promptly and sounds awesome, thanks to a
dual exhaust that terminates in a pair of Flowmaster mufflers. The
engine pairs with a 3-speed automatic C4 transmission renowned for
its durability and, with both power steering and four-wheel power
disc brakes on board, this Cougar is a breeze to navigate, and it
comes to a stop in a hurry.
