"One thing about picnicking via Cutlass S, you'll never forget the
pepper. Cutlass has it built in. And at a price that makes owning
it a sporty proposition. This is the new Cutlass S. Low slung, low
priced Youngmobile swinger for doing the things you do and going
the places you go. 350 cubic inch V8 or Action Line 6. Three coupes
including a bucket seat convertible." From the 1968 brochures.
For consignment, a 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass S convertible with a
title verified 59,737 actual miles. This car has been owned by our
consignor since 1973 and originally came from Arizona. More than
13,000 Cutlass S convertibles were made in 1968 but we'd wager
there aren't many left in this condition.
Exterior
Wearing its original color in now two stage application, the Willow
Gold is a welcome change of direction from your typical palette of
colors and as result, stands out. The grille and headlight
configuration are a one year only design adding even more
uniqueness to this beautiful A-body. Chrome bumpers shine bright
with the rear panel taking in the narrow horizontal tail lights at
the base of a broad decklid over dual exhaust. A beige canvas room
adds a subtle contrast to the greenish gold paint, and 14-inch
Oldsmobile Super Stock II also wears a lighter shade while trim
rings and wheel opening molding dress things up.At a distance, this
is a show ready car. Closer examination reveals some imperfections
included areas of chipped paint, a rust hole on the hood, a rock
chip in the windshield, some adhesive that's failed on the rear
window, various chips, scratches, bubbling, emblem fading, rough
surfaces under paint, and a dent on the front fender near the
bumper.
Interior
The gold vinyl door panels are handsome but show some age including
staining and cracking on the armrest while the bucket seats reveal
age through discoloration, a seam tear, and some roughness on the
plastic shell. Up front, the original steering wheel has a crack in
the plastic and some discoloration but it leads to a dashboard
that's in great shape in fantastic period green gold. A courtesy
light looms above the AM/FM radio and the glove box contours with
the bend of the mid dash. A center console houses a wood handled
shifter on a polished face plate for a Powerglide automatic, (but
more on that later), all over gold loop carpet that's in very good
condition. A green plaid vinyl mat covers the trunk where a spare
Super Stock wheel and tire reside.
Drivetrain
Presenting in a clean bay is a 350ci V8 from 1974 with a 4-barrel
carburetor, mated to a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. Power
is routed to the 12 bolt rear axle with a consignor stated 3.42
gears and Positraction. Power steering, power brakes, and A/C are
indicated by component presence in the bay.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath too, with minimal surface rust and dry conditions.
The dual exhaust flows through stock style mufflers, terminating
through black straight pipes out back. Power disc brakes are in
front with power drums in back and suspension consists of coil
springs at both ends with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
A pump of the gas and a turn of the key and the Cutlass starts up
eagerly, emits a pleasant exhaust tone, and rolls on to the test
loop where it performs well, providing decent power and straight
tracking from an time capsule of a cabin. We note the heater blower
and radio are not working but all other functions work as they
should, and we bring this drop top back to the showroom. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
"What a swingin' place for a sit-in" proclaims the 1968 brochure
about the interior featuring recessed dials and a padded dash.
Inside and out, it's a fantastic time piece and one that was
marketed to a younger audience back in the day. But it doesn't
matter how old you are, ownership of this classic will prove
rewarding and it's unlikely you'll see another one like it at your
local car shows.
