When it comes to the Golden Age of muscle cars, almost no name can
instantly open up a floodgate of memories and a rush of adrenaline
quite like the mighty Chevelle. Fully repainted in this enchanting
Sky Blue with a complementary white convertible top, this 1966
Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Convertible emanates equal parts style
and speed. A straight body, American Racing Torq Thrust II wheels,
and freedom-inspiring drop-top demeanor all combine forces to
create a boulevard bruiser or cruiser that is unlike anything else
on the road.
Inside, the supple white vinyl is inversely complemented by a
body-color-matching trim and turquoise carpeting. A split bench
seat provides plenty of room up front, while a three-spoke steering
wheel featuring an SS center cap sits in front of a column-mounted
Sunrpo 8,000 rpm tachometer, and beyond that, a classic horizontal
120-mph speedometer, while the throwback sliding HVAC controls
(complete with air conditioning) remind us how simple driving used
to be. An upgrade AM/FM/AUX head unit handles soundtrack duties,
while the floor-mounted stick promises to offer up an engaging
ride, whether it's across town or cross-country.
Under the hood, we find a transplanted 396 cubic-inch V-8 engine
looking right at home with its chrome air cleaner and old-school
primer-orange-painted block and intake manifold. A single
four-barrel carburetor feeds this beast, while a set of long tube
headers feeds into a true dual exhaust to give this old school
muscle car the sound it should have. Power flows from that big
block to a tried-and-true Muncie M20 four-speed manual
transmission, before the 12-bolt rear transfers those ponies to the
pavement via fifteen-inch American Racing wheels, shod in
255/60R-15 Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires.
