With its striking, deep red paint, assortment of contrasting black
stripes, and a geometric hood scoop, this 1983 Ford Mustang GT is
an outstanding torchbearer of early '80s automotive aesthetics.
This sharp-looking cruiser holds some serious historical
significance as well, as it's a proud member of the class of
Fox-bodied Mustangs that not only served as proof that its
manufacturer had returned to producing performance-centric cars
that rekindled the enthusiasm of the buying public, but arguably
even helped save the Ford brand. Featuring that distinctive
"four-eyed" headlight configuration and a confidence-inspiring
running condition, it's well-positioned for plenty of future
fun-filled miles.
Although you may find some evidence of wear here and there inside
the doors, this vintage Ford provides a comfortable driving
environment. The front buckets are well-padded and straddle a
center console that offers some welcome storage space while putting
the shift lever within easy reach. An aftermarket steering wheel is
perched on the tilting column and the factory gauges just beyond it
are not only surprisingly clear, but also still functional. At the
center of the dash area, the AM/FM/Cassette stereo is standing by
to offer an era-appropriate audio experience. While the factory air
conditioning will need a bit of attention to get back online, all
the components are present and accounted for.
Beneath that retro-stylish, scooped hood, the engine bay is in good
shape and includes a few tasteful modifications to up its game. The
5.0-liter, high-output V8 standing by at the center of the
compartment wears a pair of Mustang valve covers with eye-catching
lettering and has been outfitted with a pair of steel long tube
headers to help minimize back-pressure. It hails from a class of
engines that developed a reputation for reliability and, true to
form, fed by a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, it's running strong,
starting up without issue, and idling smoothly. The accompanying
5-speed manual transmission shifts without issue and puts full
control of its output in the hands of the driver. Power rack and
pinion steering makes for low-effort, slop-free navigation, while
power brakes that feature discs in front bring this classic to a
prompt stop when called upon.
