1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham 4 Door Sedan
"The fifth generation Oldsmobile Cutlass that debuted for 1978 saw
the model downsized to the shorter GM A-body platform. The '78
Cutlass could be had as either a fastback coupe or a sedan in Salon
and Salon Brougham models, as well as Supreme, Supreme Brougham and
Calais coupes." Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham 4 door
sedan with a title verified 33,606 actual miles. Oldsmobile
produced more than one million cars in 1983 and 28,451 of them were
Supreme Broughams with four doors. Through the late 70's and 80's,
Oldsmobile produced popular cars for families and commuters in
higher numbers than most imports.
Note: This vehicle is sold with a Pennsylvania reconstructed
branding on the title
Exterior
A mix of single stage and base clear Light Royal Blue is a sign of
some paint work, not overly showy and meant to blend in and for
those looking for a mid size four door, the Cutlass Supreme was
there to fill the niche. With a sturdy, square design, both B and C
pillars are deliberate and strong and in profile, the car functions
as a conservatively designed mode of transportation, straight
panels and full wheel covers on 75 series tires. Dual headlights
are shared across the Olds line in '83 and its grille is divided by
a panel, here wearing the Supreme designation rather than the Olds
rocket emblem. A pinstripe and side molding are standard fare for
the period and square tail lights with 12 parts adorn the back over
the chrome bumper. Imperfections include some paint chips,
blistering on a door, dings in the wheel opening trim, and a few
scratches.
Interior
Naturally, this was the velour era and it graces our four doors
along with molded blue plastic and simulated wood wrapped in chrome
framing, and of course, carpeted kick panels. You've got cranks for
the front windows but only a levered hinge for the rear quarter
vent windows to go with the ashtrays provided on the seat backs.
Button tufted and pillow topped blue velour covers front and rear,
a 70/30 bench split up front and two position throne in back and
all present in nice condition. Blue and burlwood dress the control
area, beginning with the slim steering wheel and beautifully
presented on the horizontal instrument cluster, vent panel, clock,
and familiar center box containing A/C levers and an AM/FM/Cassette
radio. Medium pile blue carpet below and blue felt headliner above
keeps things color coordinated and appear fresh, while the trunk
wears a cut to fit carpet remnant in clean, high pile coverage.
Drivetrain
This commuter gets the prevalent 307ci V8, rated at an emission
saving 140 horsepower and fueled via a 4-barrel carburetor. It's
mated to GM's ubiquitous TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that
sends power to the 10 bolt out back. The bay presents as original
in relatively clean condition.
UndercarriageTypical surface rust and mostly dry conditions are
found underneath with some residual oil on the inspection plate and
pan the only diversion. A single exhaust flows through a stock
style muffler while power brakes are on board as front disc and
rear drum. Suspension is also standard for the time with coil
springs front and rear with a 4 link aiding the solid rear
axle.
Drive-Ability
We step back in time to a very familiar color and place and set the
307 onto the test loop where it performs smoothly. This is no barn
burner, it was originally intended to get you from A to B in
comfort and 40 years later, it's still fulfilling that mission. The
seats are butter soft and so is the steering, and this car works to
not only transport us back to the mall, but also back to the 80's!
We note the A/C not working but all other functions work just like
they did when Billie Jean was a new song. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
For many, this car may remind you of your first, once your parent
or grandparent was done with it. Others may have memories of riding
in the back seat only and if you had a four door, you were living!
Whether it's Radwood or any other show, old Oldsmobiles elicit a
response, and this one is sure to please!
