When the time came to replace his revolutionary Model T, Henry Ford
resisted. It had sold in the millions and transformed the world, if
it's not broken, why fix it? But the market didn't share his
sentiment, and competitors like Chevrolet and Dodge had begun to
close the gap. Finally, in late 1927, Ford relented, and the Model
A was born. At once modern, practical, and attractively styled,
thanks largely to Edsel Ford's discerning eye, the Model A retained
the mechanical honesty of the T but embraced the 1930s with
confidence and grace.
The old planetary gearbox and crude controls were no longer; in
came a 3-speed manual transmission, 40-horsepower L-head
inline-four, and more refined ride and handling characteristics.
The car felt grown-up, capable of higher speeds, and dressed in a
wide array of body styles and colors. Between 1928 and 1931, more
than 4 million Model As were sold, and nearly a century later,
their charm, usability, and unmistakable personality have kept them
around.
The example presented here is a 1930 Standard Roadster, finished in
classic Washington Blue with black fenders with a tan folding top
and matching interior. Previously acquired in 2020 and treated to a
thoughtful cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment, blending
period-correct finishes with sensible upgrades. Per the previous
owner, the body was removed from the chassis and repainted, and
both the frame and running gear were refreshed to a clean, cohesive
appearance. While some evidence of prior rust repair is visible,
the paint retains a healthy gloss, with tidy panel fit and plenty
of visual appeal.
Period accessories include dual side-mounted spares, wind wings, a
tilt-out windshield, straw-colored 19-inch wire wheels, and a
radiator stone guard, giving the car a confident, slightly sporty
stance. While not over-accessorized, it wears just enough hardware
to feel special, without overshadowing its unpretentious,
road-ready character.
Inside, the simple bench seat is trimmed in fresh tan upholstery,
complemented by a matching rumble seat for two additional
passengers. The interior presents in excellent condition with
minimal signs of use since the restoration. The canvas top folds
easily and remains in good order, and the driver's instruments are
set into a body-colored steel dash with a pleasingly clean
layout.
Power comes from the robust 201-cubic-inch L-head inline-four,
bored .080" over and rebuilt with new internals including valves,
rods, and bearings. The engine runs on a modern 12-volt electrical
system with a negative ground for improved reliability. Power is
sent to the rear wheels via a 3-speed sliding gear transmission
with a resurfaced flywheel. Additional mechanical work during the
2020 restoration included rebuilt shocks, steering arms, kingpins,
and a fresh set of cast-iron drum brakes - resulting in a tight,
responsive driving experience that's a far cry from the spindly,
vague feel some associated with early cars.
Whether you're stepping into vintage car ownership for the first
time or adding to a seasoned collection, this Roadster hits the
sweet spot. It has style and substance in equal measure: clean
cosmetics, fresh mechanicals, and a friendly personality that
encourages you to drop the top, hop in, and hit the road. As much
at home on club tours as it is at the local Sunday cars-and-coffee,
this Model A offers timeless appeal that's hard to beat.
Offers welcome and trades considered.
