This 1919 Pierce-Arrow Model 31 Touring Sedan represents the
pinnacle of Nickel Era motoring, blending ornate craftsmanship with
advanced engineering. One of just three known examples in
existence, this Dual Valve Pierce retains its matching-numbers
chassis and engine and is accompanied by a comprehensive history
file. Finished in two-tone Pastel Green with brown pinstriping, the
cast-aluminum panel body is riveted for strength and lightness and
remains exceptionally well-preserved. Additional exterior features
include patented fender-mounted headlights, 10-spoke open wheels
with whitewall tires, a leather-strap-secured rear trunk and a dark
brown folding convertible top with custom-made fabric side
curtains. The nickel brightwork has been fully replated and retains
a mirror finish. The interior is trimmed in rich brown leather with
front bucket seats and a rear bench, complemented by matching
leather trim and side pouches in the rear doors. Instrumentation
includes a Waltham clock and fully functional gauges for oil
pressure, amperage, fuel and mileage. The right-hand-drive
configuration features a right-side floor-mounted gear shifter.
Power is supplied by Pierce-Arrow's 415ci Dual Valve inline
6-cylinder engine, installed in 1920, producing 75hp at 2,200 rpm,
paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Features include an
updraft carburetor and dual ignition system. Mechanical restoration
was completed by noted Pierce specialist Richard Bowley and
includes a full engine rebuild, modern radiator core with
period-correct faade, rebuilt steering box with new gears and
bearings, and new brakes. Suspension consists of semi-elliptical
leaf springs with Hartford shock absorbers. The Pierce-Arrow spent
decades in California's Central Valley before being acquired in
2007 by noted Pierce-Arrow collector Patrick Craig, who initiated a
comprehensive frame-up restoration. Interior work was completed by
Ken Niminick using period-correct materials. Subsequent owners,
including Tom and JoAnn Martindale, toured extensively and earned
awards at Hillsborough, Palo Alto and regional HCCA events. In
2016, Mosier Restoration of Inglewood, CA, completed additional
mechanical work to ensure continued reliability.
