For Sale: 1990 Chevrolet C/K 1500 in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1990 Chevrolet C1500 SS454 Pickup

"While there's no question that it had one of the best engines ever put in a Chevrolet truck, the Chevrolet 454 SS was more than a tire smoking brute. Chevrolet could have stuffed a 454 cubic inch big block into a 1990 Silverado C1500, given it a black out paint scheme, slapped some contrasting decals on it and called it a day. Thankfully, they went the extra mile, working on the suspension to improve handling and laying the groundwork for a new class of sport truck. MotorTrend estimates that Chevrolet produced around 17,000 454 SS pickups over its four year production run, with "75 percent of that figure" being 1990 models. Slashgear.com

For consignment, a 1990 Chevrolet C1500 SS454 pickup truck with a title verified 113,931 actual miles. As Carbuzz puts it, "the 90's was the real renaissance for the muscle truck, with multiple brands launching their own takes on the muscle truck formula, from twin turbo V6's and supercharged V8's, to honking great N/A engines."

Exterior
For 1990, you could have any color SS you wanted, as long as it was black. The next three model years would introduce white and red to the mix, but for the launch year, only bad to the bone black would do. And if you can believe it, some people would strip the decals off to create even more of a sleeper, but our example still wears them proudly on the bed, a touch faded from age, but all there! That bed is topped with a glossy and lockable bed cover which you can view through the sliding rear window. Taking a cue from the Grand National, the grille, bumpers, and sport mirrors are completely black while the 15-inch wheels are chromed for contrast with black center caps. Imperfections on this much loved truck include some fading paint on the roof and various other spots, rock chips on front and mirrors, checking on the hood, touched up chips, various scratches with clusters on the rear bumper, painted quarter panel corners, and a tear in the front air dam.

Interior
Chevrolet optioned the interior for you as well with Garnet Red and red velour, beginning on the door panel where a storage bin is lined with carpet, a bit frayed from years of use but fully intact. The doors also show the power window option and a set of speakers. High back, red velour bucket seats flank a center console and the driver's entry point shows some typical wear. Up front, the motif is primarily black beginning with the steering wheel which fronts a standard instrument cluster. To the right are boxy plastic switches of the A/C panel and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD player. The glovebox wears a black covering, the red carpet is in great shape, the headliner is now black with some flop to the red visors, and the bed features a plastic liner showing use but intact.

Drivetrain
Here's the magic sauce presenting cleanly under the hood, a 454ci V8 rated at 230 horsepower and mated to a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 14 bolt axle in back with 3.73 gears and limited slip.

Undercarriage
A trailer hitch and spare tire show up first as we start our tour in back on this very clean underside. A single exhaust finds a FlowMaster muffler which sends two tailpipes rearward and exiting via chrome tips behind the right rear wheel. There is no catalytic converter on the system. Power brakes are present with disc in front and drums in the rear and suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in the rear.

Drive-Ability
It feels like your typical C1500 until you start the big block in this one and it rumbles at a few decibels more than your average pickup. It runs through our test loop trouble free with smooth, straight tracking, good power, and perfect visibility. We note the A/C is not working but all other functions of this rather simple configuration work as intended, and it's off to the truck room for this muscle truck. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Motogallery.com sums it up for you. "The 454 SS occupies a notable niche as the archetypal factory big block street truck. It featured prominently in period road tests and advertising and became a staple at local drag strips and cruise nights. As the performance pickup genre matured-with the GMC Syclone/Typhoon on one flank and Ford's SVT Lightning on the other-the 454 SS remained the purist's choice: rear drive, naturally aspirated, and gloriously over engined."
