Some cars just stand the test of time better than others. The very
definition of refined luxury, this 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450SL exudes
success from every angle. Decked out in its Anthracite Grey
Metallic exterior, this German grand tourer boasts a manual soft
top and removable hard top, allowing it to be enjoyed year-round if
so desired. The 2001 model is also significant because it marks the
final year for the R107-series SL450 and adds one more reason this
iconic luxury sports car should be considered for anyone's
collection.
Inside, we find a lavish (for the time) grey leather interior. A
center console separates two plush bucket seats, with a small
storage area in back that is now home to a pair of MGT speakers,
powered by the Sony AM/FM/AUX head unit, which also offers
Bluetooth connectivity. A four-spoke, power-assisted steering wheel
sits just ahead of a three-pod analog gauge cluster featuring a big
center-mounted 85 mph speedometer, bookended by a Euro version of
the tic-toc-tach with a 7,000 rpm tach and small clock on the
passenger side, while a multi-readout fuel, engine temperature, and
oil temperature combo. Power windows, air conditioning, and cruise
control provide most of the modern amenities available nearly half
a century ago.
Under that expansive hood, we find a 24-valve single overhead cam
4.5-liter V-8 engine. From the factory, this engine pumped out
around 160 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque, in part due to
its multi-point fuel injection. That power is routed through a
three-speed automatic transmission before being sent out to the
14-inch wheels shod in 205/70R-14 tires.
