Due to its early 1985 production, this chassis is among the
exclusive first 200 "genuine homologation" 288 GTOs-built prior to
the FIA homologation stamp date of June 1, 1985. These rare early
cars are coveted by serious collectors, and their value continues
to rise in today's market.
The 288 GTO was born as Enzo himself was disappointed in Ferrari's
production cars and non-existent presence in racing outside of
Formula One. He enlisted the smartest minds from Nichola Materazzi
& Leonardo Fioravanti. The Ferrari 288 GTO was produced as a
homologation special, created so Ferrari could enter the fearsome
FIA Group B racing category with a mid-engined, twin-turbo V8
supercar. In practice, it became a showcase for Ferrari's most
advanced technology of the mid-1980s, using composite materials,
forced induction and race-derived engineering to significantly
outpace the standard 308 on which it was loosely based. Although
Group B circuit racing was cancelled before the car could compete,
Ferrari still built a limited run for its most devoted clients,
turning the 288 GTO into an exclusive road-going embodiment of
Ferrari's racing ambitions and a spiritual forerunner to later halo
cars like the F40.
A truly outstanding 288 GTO, boasting impeccable documentation,
elite ownership history, ties to deep Ferrari Heritage. Giuseppe
Risi is the modern day Luigi Chinetti; like Chinetti, Risi owned a
Ferrari dealership and ran the racing team for Ferrari in North
America. Risi raced 333SP's, 360 GT's, 430 GT's, 458 GT's and up to
the 296 GT's. He's raced and won Daytona, Sebring and LeMans. The
288 GTO is very important in Ferrari's lineage as it was the first
of the "Halo Cars" and if it wasn't for the 288, there wouldn't
have been an F40. The 288 still stands as the lowest production
volume among the special cars at 272 units worldwide. This
particular car has fastidious service history that is documented,
it is believed to be the first 288 GTO to be certified at the
factory in Maranello by the historian's account. This car was
cosmetically and mechanically restored at the factory in 2010-2011
under Risi's stewardship. This was the peak of Risi's Ferrari
competition days, and his cars received special treatment at the
factory. This car has just undergone a comprehensive major service
by Ferrari of Naples as well as concours treatment in house at GT
Motor Cars. This is a car that you This the definitive collector's
