When Ford revived the Thunderbird with its retro-styled
eleventh-generation model, it nailed the design but failed to
market its (then) new luxury-level drop-top properly, and thus
didn't sell as many as perhaps it should have. But this 2004 Ford
Thunderbird we have for you today, with just 49,400 actual miles on
its odometer, gives you a second chance to add one of these
head-turning cars to your collection. Decked out in its original
Silver Birch Pearl Metallic paint, complete with its body-color
removable fiberglass hardtop, this T-Bird is ready to ride even
when the temperature dips.
Inside, we find a nicely appointed leather interior featuring a
pair of plush bucket seats separated by a full-length center
console, complete with a storage armrest and dual cupholders. A
four-spoke power-assisted steering wheel features thumb controls
and that iconic Thunderbird logo. Beyond that wheel sits a four-pod
cluster of sporty white-faced gauges. A large 7,000-rpm tachometer
and a 160-mph speedometer are flanked by smaller temperature and
fuel gauges. Power seats, mirrors, locks, and windows, along with
cruise control, heated seats, and air conditioning, allow you to
make this T-Bird a four-season ride if you so choose.
Under the hood, we find a clean engine bay featuring a
numbers-matching dual-overhead-cam, 32-valve, 3.9-liter V-8 engine
produced in collaboration with Jaguar. From the factory, the later
T-Birds like this one produced an impressive 280 horsepower at
6,000 rpm and 286 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. That power is
routed through an original 5R55S five-speed automatic transmission
before heading to a 3.58:1-gearing eight-inch rear end, which
transfers power to the pavement via a set of 17-inch factory chrome
alloy wheels shod with 235/50R-17 Michelin tires.
