This 1971 Ford F-250 Highboy is a really cool and really clean
truck with a unique history. You don't see too many Highboys' come
up for sale anymore in this price range. This truck started its
life as a US Forestry Truck before it became a Fire Truck in
Wisconsin. The truck was retired in 1994 and has been owned by a
private individual since then and we purchased it from him. The
miles are believed to be original, which is is common for these old
fire pickups, but we cannot verify this 100%. The body on this
truck is really clean and straight. It has had paintwork over the
years and the original colors were Mallard Green and White. When it
was purchased by the last owner it had a Flat Bed on it from the
fire department and he put the factory long bed on the truck. The
paint all looks great with only some patina by the Fire Department
Lettering. The colors are now Candy Apple Red & White. The trim and
chrome appear to be original and are nice. The underside is clean
and nice and has been painted as well. We found no rust issues with
this truck.
The interior is nice and it is basically stock. The inside of the
cab still shows the original paint colors from the Forest Service.
The seat has been freshly reupholstered and the carpet is newer
along with a new dash cap and headliner. The door panels, dash, and
dash bezel are original. The headlights, taillights, brakelights,
and turn signals are all working. The spot lots are not working.
The gauges all work. The horn, heat, and windshield wipers work.
This is not an AC truck. It does have an aftermarket radio from
back in the day but it is not working.
Mechanically this truck is excellent!! It starts easy and runs and
drives down the road great. These Fire Department trucks were
always over maintained. The engine is believed to be the original
5.9L 360 V8 and it runs strong with no issues or red flags that we
found. The previous owner had the engine pulled and resealed which
included front and rear main seals, timing cover seal, and valve
cover gasket seals. It has a newer 2 barrel Carb and Aluminum
radiator. The transmission is the np435 4 Speed manual that shifts
nice with a strong clutch. It is mated to a the Dana 24 Divorced
transfer case and the 4WD works like it should. The rear axle is a
Dana 60 with 3.73 gears. The front axle is a Dana 44 with 3.73
gears. This truck has power drum brakes and no power steering. It
is sitting on cool Factory Ford Steel Wheels painted white to match
and has new 285/70/16 All Terrain tires.
