Yet in 1971, Oldsmobile held its ground with one last, brilliant effort-the sophisticated but brutally powerful 442. That year, the 442 was offered exclusively with 455-cubic-inch V-8 power. True to its reputation, "Dr. Oldsmobile," the fictional mad scientist of period advertisements, still managed to extract serious performance from the big-block. The legendary W-30 option was conservatively rated at 350 gross horsepower, though actual output was far stronger than advertised, keeping insurance companies guessing. With the W-30, the 442 was fully capable of quarter-mile times under 15 seconds, and when paired with the Muncie four-speed manual and 3.42:1 axle ratio, acceleration was even more exhilarating.
