Part automobile, part theatrical spectacle, the Graham-Paige Sound
Train was commissioned by Paramount Pictures for its Publix Theater
chain in the late 1920s as a rolling billboard for their upcoming
pictures. Beginning with a Graham-Paige Model 837, 15 examples were
built via the Harry O. McGee Company in Indianapolis where the
radical transformation would begin. To give fans the same sensation
as seeing an actual train coming down the road, the front end was
modified to include a new locomotive-style front bumper, and new
rounded hood design with functioning smokestacks and a bell to
further enhance the train resemblance.
Based upon a Graham-Paige Model 837, the Sound Train is powered by
an eight-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed transmission that
makes for easy touring. The interior remained largely unchanged
from a standard Model 837 Limousine with the exception of an added
public-address system that has been retrofitted for modern use.
Period images show that Paramount put their Sound Trains to good
use, and examples could frequently be seen driving through
prominent locations in publicity stunts, parades, and perhaps even
the occasional transport of a Paramount star to a movie
premiere.
As one of only fifteen examples originally commissioned, very few
examples are known to survive today, with as few as four rumored to
remain. This particular example was acquired decades ago by the
current owner's father. During the family's long-term ownership, it
has been thoroughly enjoyed at various car shows, cruises, and
parades. As a rare piece of history that combines Hollywood glamour
with a desirable automobile, this vehicle offers an unprecedented
opportunity for collectors to stand out with something truly
unique.
