Introduced way back in 1963 as the ultimate track package for
America's favorite sports car, the Z06 has spent the better part of
the last 20 years embarrassing much more expensive competitors. As
the successor to the C4 Corvette ZR1 extreme performance option,
the C5 Z06 took horsepower and handling to another level. Using a
tuned version of the standard LS1 Corvette engine, the Z06 produced
405hp and weighed considerably less than its high powered
predecessor.
For consignment, a 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 with a title
verified 36,117 actual miles. This modified version sports a
Vortech supercharger and has made 569hpat the tires on the dyno,
and includes cosmetic accenting that adds to its menacing
charm.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
As if dipped in a vat of ink, this sinister Z06 presents in deep
black paint augmented not only by the black Z06 wheels, but by dark
smoked lenses including the marker lights, tail lights, and third
brake light. All that black makes any visible red pop and you can
see the calipers peeking through the spokes, engraved Corvette
painted red, tow hooks front and rear, spears that line the center
of the hood, and of course, let's not forget the crossed flag
emblems and the Z in Z06. That 405 expressed on the fender might be
fine for mere mortal Z06's, if there is such a thing, but this one
boasts more and maybe throws some more clues with enormous exhaust
tips on the quad presentation. Condition wise, we find only some
chin scrapes and the rest of the car is nearly flawless. Our ZR
rated tires enjoy a date code no earlier than late 2021.
Interior
Well of course the palette is black inside and the standard door
panels do not veer from full color coverage, opening to the cockpit
where black leather bucket seats invite you in, the driver's perch
showing some wrinkles and a touch of wear on the ingress point on
the side bolster. Up front, some high performance accommodations
are made starting with the center stripe on the steering wheels and
the pack of added gauges on the A-pillar along with a shift light.
The Z06 standard instrument cluster is front and center while the
center stack holds a simple AM/FM/Multi-CD unit and push button A/C
controls, along with the spec plate. The center console is graced
by a stout MGW shifter with a large ball handle while the floor is
enhanced with Z06 mats over tight black carpet. Z06 is also
embroidered on the seats and shows up as an emblem on the carpeted
package shelf behind the seats.
Drivetrain
Here's the hot sauce! A 5.7 liter LS6 V8 with a Vortech V2 S1
supercharger along with a Comp Cams valve spring and trunnion kit.
It's mated to a Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission routing
power to the rear axle with 3.42 gears and Positraction.
Undercarriage
Conditions are clean and dry underneath where we start with those
quad exhausts and track frontwards through straight pipes and
ending at Billy Boat headers into the block. There are no catalytic
converters on board. Four wheel power disc brakes are improved by
Powerstop Track Day rotors and carbon metallic pads. Suspension
consists of the race inspired SLA double wishbone configuration
with transverse mounted composite springs and monotube shock
absorbers.
Drive-Ability
You could be a 98 pound weakling and still feel tough behind the
wheel of this mean looking Z06 and while we might weigh a bit more,
it still seems to increase testosterone, especially when you crank
the engine and release the glorious roar of the muffler-less
exhaust! On the tarmac, the Vette demonstrates fantastic power and
acceleration, the typical outstanding handling, and braking that is
virtually track worthy. This nice build also enjoys 100% operation
from all functions on board, and we slither back to the mall to
showcase this black beauty to the public. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
If 405 horsepower is simply not enough, and off colored wheels ruin
the vibe of your Vette, this one saves the day and comes to you
with all the badassery Chevrolet couldn't put in a street car. Base
Z06's are competent, high performance cars. This one kicks things
up a notch, or two.
