Finished in the classic color combination, Black with a Red
interior, this exceptional T-2 Speedster was imported by Hoffman
Motors Cars in New York City. Factory options included sealed-beam
headlights and US-market bumpers for delivery to North America.
The paintwork is in superb condition, repainted by European
Collectibles in 2017, complemented by the brightwork and aluminum
trim. The gaps and panel fit are excellent throughout. The interior
is finished in Red vinyl with Speedster seats, Red German
square-weave carpets, a black canvas soft top, a black boot cover,
VDO instrumentation, and an original VDM steering wheel with a
deluxe horn ring. Date-coded Lemmerz 4" x 15" chrome-slotted
wheels are mounted on Pirelli Cinturato CN36 tires (dated 2022),
further enhancing authenticity. The undercarriage is solid and
rust-free, and the suspension components and undercarriage have
been beautifully detailed.
Mr. Murphy from Tarzana, California, owned this Speedster for a
decade from 1983 through the early 2000s. It then passed through
European Collectibles in 2004, who sold it to the current owner. At
that time, the Speedster was sold, and the 1600cc engine was
rebuilt by European Collectibles, incorporating big-bore pistons
and cylinders and big-valve cylinder heads to enhance the
performance and drivability. In 2016, the Speedster returned to
European Collectibles for a complete exterior cosmetic restoration,
during which time it was fully disassembled and refinished to show
level. Since completion, it has been well-maintained and is ready
to be driven and enjoyed!
Mechanically powered by the matching 1.6-liter normally aspirated
engine paired to a manual 4-speed transmission (Type 644) with
four-wheel drum braking system. This Speedster is a joy to drive
and hard to explain; it delivers the pure, lightweight driving
experience that defines the late 1950s 356A T2 generation-offered
with a tool kit, jack, boot cover, spare wheel, side curtains, and
28 years of service history. Rarely do T2 Speedsters (1957-1958
production) come up for sale, making this example a particularly
compelling acquisition for collectors and enthusiasts seeking
authenticity and provenance.
