When GM resurrected the Z06 package for the C5 Corvette in 2001, it
changed the world of American sports cars. Fun and fast, the Z
offered performance in a package that could be lived with and
driven every day. This beautiful Torch Red 2003 Chevrolet Corvette
Z06 is only on its third owner (the last since 2008) and represents
the 50th year of GM's halo car. With just 63,388 miles, it has
plenty of life left to be enjoyed by its new owner.
Inside, we find a rare factory red-and-black two-tone leather
interior that was only about 1 in 5 Z06 models were outfitted with,
and less than 6 percent of all C5s made for 2003 can boast. Power
bucket seats sit in front of a six-pod analog gauge cluster
featuring a 7,000-rpm and 200-mph speedometer. Unlike some of its
contemporaries, this car comes with all of the modern luxury
amenities that help make the Z06 a daily-driven supercar. Power
locks, windows, seats, mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, a
factory AM/FM/CD stereo, and a heads-up display are all within
arm's reach of the comfortable, supportive seats.
Under the hood, we find a 5.7-liter small block V-8. Unlike the
LS1-equipped base C5, the Z06 received an upgraded LS6 motor with a
higher lift camshaft and better-flowing heads. In stock form, the
post-2001 LS6 motors put down an incredible 405 hp and 400
pound-feet of torque. At the same time, redline was increased to
6,500 rpm (versus 6,000 in the base car, so owners could listen to
that small block wind out another 500 rpm before grabbing the next
gear. Speaking of gears, all that power is channeled through a
rear-mounted Tremec T-56 six-speed manual transmission via a
3.42-geared transaxle before reaching the rear wheels.
