While classics from the 1950s and '60s certainly have their place
at every car show and meet-up, we occasionally come across a
modern-classic that ignites our passion for all things automotive
in a different yet familiar way. One look at this jet-black 2006
Chevrolet SSR Supercharged Six-Speed with its power-retractable
hardtop and short-bed design, and you can understand exactly what
we mean. With just 69,764 actual miles on its odometer, this short
bed muscle truck's retro style looks just as good with its top up
or down.
Inside, we find a host of modern amenities that old-school hot rods
can only dream of. A stock black leather interior featuring dual
power leather seats, power windows, locks, and mirrors, along with
a backup camera, and an upgraded Sony AM/FM/AUX Bluetooth
touchscreen head unit, creates a warm, comfortable cabin, with or
without the wind blowing through your hair. A power bed cover
release, air-conditioning, cruise control, and a center console
highlighted by a three-pod auxiliary gauge cluster all serve to
make road trips of any distance overwhelmingly enjoyable.
For 2005, the SSR got a big upgrade under that trick wedge-shaped
hood. Gone is the 5.3-liter Vortec V-8 from earlier years, and in
its place we find a Corvette-derived 6.0-liter LS2 V-8 engine. In
stock form, the LS2 was capable of pumping out an impressive 390
horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque when it rolled off the
assembly line two decades ago. However, this truck has been blessed
with a Magneson roots-style supercharger bolted to its intake
manifold. While we don't have exact numbers, one blip of the
throttle is all you need to verify that "pick up" will have a new
meaning. Adding to the fun, those ponies are routed through a
Tremec six-speed transmission before being sent out to the ten-bolt
rear end, which transmits power to the pavement via a set of big
20-inch polished five-spoke wheels shod in massive 295/40R-20
rubber. At the same time, a smaller set of 19-inch wheels wrapped
in 255/40R-19 tires gives this throwback pickup the perfect
staggered hot rod stance.
