Nicknamed "The Dark Knight," this 1967 Ford Mustang with a factory
fastback body (not a fastback conversion) was built by Ron
Hentschel of Ironic Manufacturing & Design, the original designer
and engineer of the wedged-out widebody. Work includes internal
structure reinforcement, rockers widened, doors extended out, rear
quarter-panels wedged outward and taillight panel stretched,
pushing out the taillights to keep with the factory lines. This
design takes weeks of hands-on metal fabrication wedging out the
rear of the car by 7 inches. The next modification was to integrate
a chassis that would work with a unibody design and made to house a
Coyote V8 bringing the Mustang design up to date for a modern
engine and suspension. Suspension components include C6 solid
billet aluminum spindles for strength, an independent front
suspension with QA1 dual adjustable coilovers used in autocross and
performance driving, and a semi-floating rear 9-inch differential
with pivot and swing arm, Watts links and Heim joints, and QA1
double adjustable coilovers. The brake system is setup for
performance handling with Wilwood components including 6-piston
front calipers, 4-piston rear calipers, a Wilwood 1-inch bore
master cylinder and copper brake lines. Performance comes from a
2-year custom-built Gen 3 Coyote 5.0 engine by Prestige
Motorsports, known to be the only Borla induction aluminum
downdraft kit to be married to a Ford Performance Gen 3 Coyote
engine. The manual transmission is a brand-new Tremec Ford TKX
5-speed manual with an aluminum bellhousing, a RAM
hydraulic-to-bearing dual-disc clutch and an aluminum driveshaft.
Engine performance is also enhanced with custom-fit headers and a
Borla stainless exhaust system. The engine cooling system utilizes
an aluminum radiator with three Bluetooth-monitored and controlled
electric fans that can be modified with climate changes via
smartphone. A complete 1967 Mustang wiring harness made by American
Autowire was installed, and the dash speedometer and gauges are
Dakota Digital HDX units using an upgraded GPS-linked speedometer.
Steering is a rack & pinion setup with a modern electronic assist
system that has comfort adjustment from easy to performance to
track mode with a turn of a knob. A complete, new air-conditioning
system with heater and defrost by Old Air Products System was
installed. Interior features include a Spark Industries custom-made
billet aluminum steering wheel crafted from a solid block of
aluminum with hand-stitched leather wrap, TMI custom bucket seats
and matching door panels, a Shelby-style leather-wrapped center
console, a high-rise molded headliner for additional headroom, and
a JL Audio and Blaupunkt 2,000-watt audio system. Additional
upgrades include electronically controlled parking brake, electric
trunk release, LED rear Shelby lights, LED interior and exterior
lighting, an under-hood automatic engine safety extinguisher and a
Bluetooth battery monitor accessible via smartphone app. Exterior
and chassis enhancements include 20-inch custom wheels by Billet
Specialties wrapped in Continental ExtremeContact tires, billet
coat hooks, billet lock knobs, billet custom-made shifter, billet
hood pins, undercarriage battery terminal access with custom
dropped battery trunk storage, a finished trunk, Ford tooling
windshield, Ford tooling rear Shelby light lenses, custom
Ringbrothers door handles, tilt steering column, full interior and
underside sound and heat protection, an aircraft and Shelby
race-style flip gas cap, front and rear sway bars, hand-made
aluminum black side scoop grilles, aluminum fuel tank, aluminum
Borla fuel rails and an in-tank fuel pump. The engine management
system features a FuelTech FT550 engine control unit, FuelTech
FTSpark-8 ignition manager, and FuelTech air and fuel controller.
