As a bona fide automotive symbol for an entire counterculture, this
1964 Volkswagen Type 2 21-Window Deluxe is about as iconic a ride
as can be, and its distinctive configuration makes it even more so.
The combination of its factory-correct, two-tone paint job and the
open-air feeling conveyed by its multitude of windows gives you the
impression that it was teleported into the present from its
original era while transporting a group of sightseers across exotic
territory. It's a very nice, fresh-looking presentation of a
beloved classic, with well-aligned body panel gaps, doors that open
and shut just as smoothly as they did when it first debuted more
than 60 years ago, and brightwork that's been restored to top
form.
Climb inside, and you'll be greeted by an interior that has been
treated to the same level of care, with vinyl-clad bench seating
that shows only slight wear, including the rear row, which may
still be wearing its original cover. Take a look around and you'll
see well-fitted door panels and rubber matting that's in great
shape. Up front, the instrument panel houses a VDO gauge that
displays its readings through a clear lens, and to the right of it,
you'll find a period-correct AM radio that stands ready to be
called upon to provide an era-appropriate audio experience.
You'd have to search high and low for quite some time to find a VW
bus that drives as nicely as this one does. A glance at the engine
compartment offers the first clue that it has also received plenty
of attentive care, where you'll find its air-cooled 1500-cc
powerplant sitting in the center of a nicely maintained bay. Fed by
a factory-correct single-barrel carburetor, it really runs great,
starting up promptly via a manual choke and idling smoothly. The
accompanying 4-speed manual transmission shifts through the gears
with no issues at all, and the clutch action is surprisingly
smooth. When you're out on the road, this classic tracks
arrow-straight, and the manual steering is more precise than you'd
rightfully expect from a VW of its era.
