When Volkswagen started importing its bus into the US in the mid
1950's Ford, Chrysler, and GM all took notice and each began
developing "forward control" vans to compete. As with VW, all three
used the drivetrains from its compact cars for power and in Ford's
case, it took the driveline from the Falcon and created a unibody
van and pickup truck with an F-100 leaf sprung I-beam front end.
With the driver's compartment moved over that front axle and a 7
1/2 foot bed it had lots of loading space and could be made very
cheaply.
For consignment, a 1963 Ford Econoline E100 pickup showing 98,426
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Owned by our consignor for
nine years during which time he restored the truck, including a
recent engine rebuild.
Exterior
The cab forward design puts the windshield in line with the flat
face and grille and black bumpers now serve to contrast the Pure
White paint. In profile, there are few like it with a longer
overhang up front, the cab over the front axle, forward leaning
C-pillars that give the truck a whimsical illusion of motion, and
of course, a perfectly usable bed. Out back, simple round tail
lights flank the FORD stamped tailgate and a solid window looks out
over our clean bed, topped by cut to fit, textured rubber mats. Pie
pan-like wheel covers fit the 14-inch wheels while an uncovered
wheel is mounted in the bed as a spare. Imperfections include
numerous areas of uneven filler, various chips, spider crack near
the tailgate hinge, several dings and dents on the bumpers, and a
wide gap on the passenger door.
Interior
Body colored steel door panels retain a door pull and billet style
cranks leading to brown grain vinyl bucket seats in nice shape,
separated by engine cover and added cupholder. Finger grooves line
our patina'd steering wheel leading to the body colored dashboard
with gauge cluster that also shows some age. A Ford branded AM/FM
radio sits in the center with speaker grate and glove box to the
right. A heater blower and eight track deck are below the dash and
a triple gauge pod is mounted to the engine case.
Drivetrain
Between the seats we have a clean and rebuilt 144ci inline six
cylinder rated at 74 horsepower. It is fueled via a 1-barrel
carburetor and mated to a 3-speed manual transmission on the tree,
sending power to the Ford 7" rear end with 4.00 gears. The truck
runs on a 12 volt system.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath where the single exhaust meets a stock style
muffler and terminates under the bed. Drum brakes are at all four
corners and leaf springs are found front and rear. There's minimal
surface rust, no errant fluids, and some rust on the inside of the
rear apron that appears to be encapsulated.
Drive-Ability
With the engine under your arm and your nose on the road, the
unique cabin provides great visibility and relative comfort as we
roll this novel truck onto the test loop. Sure, it won't win a drag
race, but scoots along with adequate power and tracks straight on
the older tires. We note the radio not working but all other
functions work as they should and it's back to the truck room for
this classic Ford! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
It's estimated that about 10,000 E100's were built during each
model year from 1961 to 1967 and most were used and put away wet.
That means surviving examples like this one are an uncommon sight
but their uniquely wild configuration makes them a fan favorite at
car shows everywhere!
