Dressed in glossy red paint and looking well-fitted and vital from
every angle, this 1959 Ford Thunderbird is an outstanding example
of its storied model in its more expansive, "Square Bird" era form,
where it transitioned into a full-fledged four-seater. More than 65
years after it first rolled off the assembly line, it has been
restored to top form while maintaining its original factory
configuration, so it's not only looking great but running great, as
well. Thunderbirds from this period featured a nice collection of
chrome, and as you take a lap around the car, you'll notice that
it's all in fine shape, including the beefy front bumper that
encircles an ornate grille - and its badging is all present and
accounted for.
The color-matched interior blends vinyl and cloth and really looks
sharp. As you lower yourself into the driver's seat and take a
glance around, you'll notice that there is plenty of space to
accommodate four full-sized adults. The seating is in good shape,
with front buckets that show only the slightest of wear and a rear
bench with contoured backrests that not only give it a distinctive
appearance but are also very comfortable. The white, factory-style
steering wheel offers a nice bit of contrast, and just beyond it
there are some really striking visual elements, including a chrome
instrument panel that houses a collection of clear, white-faced
gauges and an intricately detailed center console. At the center of
the dash, a retro-style AM/FM/Cassette stereo has been seamlessly
installed in place of the original radio.
This vintage Ford is powered by a period-correct 352-cubic-inch V8
that was a potent performer from the time it left the factory. Fed
by a 4-barrel carburetor that's still perched on a stock intake
manifold, the engine is in fine form, pulling with plenty of
strength and pairing with a 3-speed automatic Cruise-O-Matic
transmission that shifts with precision. The overall driving
experience this car provides is reassuringly solid. It tracks well,
its power steering is smooth and quiet, and its factory-style drum
brakes bring it to a stop with no fanfare.
