"With its unique mix of Italian style and Japanese engineering, the
Mazda MX-5 Miata based Fiat 124 Spider is a sushi roll stuffed in
cannelloni. It's more than a bunch of new badges, however, as the
124 Spider sports an exclusive turbocharged Fiat engine, unique
suspension tuning, and a more upscale interior. The pick of the 124
Spider range is still the rowdy Abarth version. You could add
thousands of dollars in options, but you'll have the same driving
enjoyment either way, thanks to the Abarth's more sporting
attitude." Car and Driver, 2019
For consignment, a 2019 Fiat Abarth 124 Spider with a title
verified 8,223 actual miles. This presents as an enthusiast's car,
with more badges than an Eagle scout, a one owner car with numerous
show appearances and awards and the occasional road rally.
Exterior
Move over Miata, this 70thAnniversary edition is adorned in a
dramatic presentation of Brilliante White, Satin Black, and red
stripes and highlights throughout, including the coveted Abarth
strobe rocker strobe stripe. The red side mirrors really pop and
bring out the red line surrounding the 17-inch black wheels. Black
runs up the middle, covering the nicely contoured hood and the
decklid and just like its vintage British counterparts, holds a
luggage rack on the trunk. Our black canvas soft top and plastic
window are in fine shape and help perpetuate that black center
while the white paint shows off the dark faced LED headlights,
bright red tail lights, and black aprons front and rear. Badges,
call outs, and decals dot each side of this car and tell the story
of a prized motorcar, not just a tool of travel and as a babied
bambino, we were not surprised to find no exterior
imperfections.
Interior
There's drama on the inside too where things start off somewhat
basically with black door panels with brushed aluminum handles,
clean, efficient, and simple. But then things get a little wild
with channeled tuck and roll inserts in bright red leather,
surrounded by red stitched black, topped by a tall headrest, and
wearing the ABARTH name. The sport steering wheel has more thumb
controls than a Nintendo game boy and leads to an exciting
instrument cluster that puts a red faced electronic tachometer
between two black faced units. The dash pad is stitched red, the
vents are ringed in red, and a center screen shows navigation,
AM/FM radio that is Bluetooth and XM compatible. Mounted next to
the automatic shifter are lap stopwatches and even if you never use
them, they're pretty darn impressive. Clean black carpet floods the
floor with Abarth scorpion mats for protection, and the finished
trunk has a rubber mat and cargo net.
Drivetrain
More decals and red features highlight the clean engine bay where
we find the 1.4 liter DOHC turbocharged inline four cylinder,
spooling out 170 horsepower and mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic
transmission with optional paddle shifter/manual, which routes
power to the rear axle with 3.58 gears and limited slip.
Undercarriage
Spotless underneath, (other than water spots), where bright red
calipers mix with yellow Bilstein shocks and the overall black
coverage. Bilstein performance suspension aids the double wishbone
in front and multilink in back while Brembos are on board for the
power disc brakes on all four corners. The exhaust flows through a
Record Monza muffler which expels four tailpipes resulting in a
sporty quartet of chrome tips out back.
Drive-Ability
No complaints here as this is a quick, nimble, and capable sports
car, and this one has air conditioning and air bags to improve your
driving experience. The seats are comfortable and the cabin is
accommodating while the exhaust note is one you want to keep going.
