This custom 1943 Chevrolet fire truck was delivered to the Air
Force on September 15, 1943. It received a complete frame-off
restoration. This fire truck is powered by a rebuilt 1970 Buick
455ci V8 engine with a cam and dual 4-barrel carburetors, mated to
a rebuilt Turbo 400 automatic transmission with an Allision
converter. It is equipped with a one-ton Spicer 70 rear end with
posi-traction. It has a Chevrolet one-ton independent front end
with power steering and power brakes, and all-new brakes, brake
lines and cylinders. The front end is narrowed 4 inches to fit the
tires under the fenders. There is a second radiator with an
electric fan mounted above the custom 28-gallon gas tank with
1.5-inch copper supply and return lines that carry water to an
electric motor-driven water pump with a custom manifold. This is
all designed to keep that big-block Buick engine cool while pumping
water. Both radiators are new or rebuilt. The pump is a Hardie
3-cylinder high-pressure pump with a 1,000-psi gauge. It is plumbed
to either pump through the hoses or the replica 50-caliber water
cannon. The pump can suck water out of a pond and pump it on a fire
or fill the custom 230-gallon stainless-steel water tank that has
seating with seatbelts for six people. Other custom features are
aluminum tread plate running boards, one-off ladders, Weld typhoon
wheels and real gold-leaf lettering by legendary Northwest
pinstriper Mitch Kim. The hose reels were lowered and moved for a
cleaner look. The bed divider was moved 11.5 inches to make room
for the rear radiator and gas tank. The bed sides were rounded and
tilted forward at the back and 1.25-inch stainless-steel handrails
were rolled to match the bedsides. In addition, 5 inches were added
to the fenders to fit smaller tires. There are over four gallons of
red paint on this truck. **TITLED AS A 1946 CHEV**
