This 1968 Shelby GT500 is powered by a 428 CJ engine. Built on
December 4, 1967, this early-production example is one of only 55
produced in its specific color and trim combination. It is verified
by a Marti Report and confirmed in the Shelby Registry. Originally
sold new at Al Grillo Ford, a known high-performance Ford and
Shelby dealership that retailed more than 70 Shelbys in 1968, this
car retains notable provenance connected to that dealership. The
Shelby Registry notes that while the car was held at the dealership
prior to sale, the original carburetor and air cleaner assembly
were stolen and replaced through an insurance claim. After
purchasing the car new, the original owner upgraded it using later
components, including a Cobra Jet engine and a conversion from the
factory automatic transmission to a 4-speed manual transmission.
Factory options include power steering, power brakes, tilt-away
steering wheel, fold-down rear seat and factory tachometer with
trip odometer. The car is finished in its factory-correct Wimbledon
White exterior color. Documentation includes the original Build
Sheet, owner's manual, Polaroid photographs from the 1980s
documenting its single repaint, and original maintenance receipts
from Ford dealerships and service stations dating through the
1980s. According to the original owner's records, the car was
placed into long-term storage during the 1990s and has remained
well-preserved since, residing in Massachusetts, New Jersey and
Texas before its offering at Barrett-Jackson. This early-production
GT500 retains its authenticity, documented provenance and original
ownership history as confirmed by factory records and the Shelby
Registry.
