The Mercedes-Benz W111 series, produced from 1959 through 1971,
stands today as one of the brand's most admired eras, blending
timeless Paul Bracq styling with advanced engineering and superb
build quality. Known for their elegant "Fintail" design in sedan
form and their stately proportions as coupes and cabriolets, the
W111 models represented Mercedes-Benz's dedication to luxury,
safety, and durability during the 1960s. The 220 SEb Cabriolet
served as the flagship open-top model of the early W111 lineup,
offering sophisticated styling, fuel-injected performance, and
hand-built craftsmanship that placed it among the most exclusive
European convertibles of its time.
This beautifully restored 1962 Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb Cabriolet
presents in exceptional condition, undergoing a comprehensive
cosmetic restoration while in Texas. The car was refinished in its
stunning Code 571 Red Metallic paintwork, paired with all-new beige
leather upholstery, a matching beige cloth convertible top, and
refurbished interior wood trim that showcases the elegance these
hand-built models are known for. The result is a rich and inviting
presentation that captures the spirit of Mercedes-Benz luxury in
its most classic form.
In 2021, the car found new ownership and traveled to Santa Fe, New
Mexico, where it was treated to a remarkable mechanical
transformation: the installation of a fully rebuilt 1971 M116 3.5L
SOHC V8 engine featuring modern Bosch Jetronic fuel injection.
Expertly rebuilt by Winger Machine, the engine received extensive
work including a freshly bored and honed block with new 92.5mm
pistons, a complete valve job with resurfaced heads, polished
crankshaft, new main and rod bearings, new timing tensioner, and a
full complement of new gaskets and ancillary components such as the
water pump, alternator, ignition wires, hoses, belts, fuel system,
filters, and more. Mated to a rebuilt, era-correct 722.0 3-speed
automatic transmission, this upgraded drivetrain delivers
reliability, strong performance, and smooth operation, all while
maintaining period-correct engineering. Restoration work was
completed in November 2022.
Its first major service took place in May 2023, including a valve
adjustment, fresh engine oil, a new brake master cylinder with
fluid flush, and additional sorting to ensure proper
instrumentation function. With fewer than 300 miles on the rebuilt
drivetrain, the car remains exceptionally tight, responsive, and
mechanically confident. All records of the engine and restoration
work are included. Since arriving at our facility, the car has
again been serviced with fresh oil and a fully reconditioned
air-conditioning system, now operating perfectly.
While not original to the 1962 model, the 3.5L V8 conversion gives
this Cabriolet the appearance and driving character of a later
280SE 3.5, a model that today commands extraordinary prices. This
thoughtfully executed tribute offers the same visual presence and
thrilling V8 experience at a far more approachable cost, while
still maintaining the craftsmanship and beauty of a true W111
Cabriolet.
Elegant, powerful, and meticulously restored, this 1962
Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb Cabriolet is a standout opportunity for
enthusiasts seeking classic Mercedes style with modernized
performance and reliability. Please call with additional questions
