1977 Chevrolet Cheyenne 20 Stepside Long Bed Pickup
"Chevy four wheel drives outsell competition because they give
buyers what buyers want. Vehicles that are tough, reliable, and
dependable. Strength, impressive durability, and the power to do
almost anything, go almost anywhere, is what Chevrolet four wheel
drives are all about. And what a wide choice Chevy offers in a half
ton four wheel drive pickup." From the dealership training video, a
9 minute film that covers every aspect of the 1977 line.
For consignment, a 1977 Chevrolet Cheyenne 20 Stepside long bed
with a title verified 87,104 actual miles. This truck has been
owned by one family since the late 70's and garage kept the entire
time.
Exterior
The single stage green paint is appropriate satin like in finish
and looking period correct and clean on this debadged truck. Even
the tailgate is blank with the manufacturer designation not
present, not even a bowtie! Up front, a black grille adds some
individuality to the truck over the standard chrome bumper and in
back, the bumper has been deleted and in its place, a smooth black
panel holding the license plate and its lights. A solid window
looks out over the wooden bed with nice wear on the planks which
alternate with green bed rails, and the green paint on the
sidewalls is in good condition. 16.5-inch aluminum slot wheels are
deep and carry 33x12.50R15LT tires with cracking sidewalls that
confirm their 32 year old age. Imperfections include some chipped
paint on the bed near the step, and cracking filler on the bottom
edge.
Interior
We don't mind the patina on the plastic door panels on the driver's
side, it's likely where a gentleman hung his elbow out for many
years. The passenger side is in better condition, of course, and
both have a woodgrain insert framed in western scroll, and a
pleated map pocket for storage. The saddle vinyl bench seat also
shows some age but given the age of the truck, it's not bad at all,
with a few small tears and general wear. The control area is
defined by black, beginning with the steering wheel and the
instrument cluster faceplate where the basic gauges live, along
with vent levers and a storage cove. No radio here, but the saddle
dash pad and woodgrain insert up front look great. It's brown
carpet on the floor, the range selector on the tunnel, and a
plastic headliner above along with a full length visor. It's
wonderfully 70's and we wouldn't change a thing, but that's up to
you, the next owner.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a driver quality 350ci V8 awaits with a 4-barrel
carburetor and a TH350 3-speed automatic bolted to a transfer case
that can send power to both the 14 bolt rear and 10 bolt front
differential. Surface rust and patina but plenty of room to work on
things!
Undercarriage
Some advanced surface rust underneath and we happen to notice a
weld repair to the underside of the side step as well. There's some
residual oil and build up on certain components, but knuckles are
clear and structurally, it appears solid underneath. Power brakes
are on board with front disc and rear drum, heavy duty leaf springs
are found front and rear as well, and dual exhaust carry FlowMaster
mufflers and dump under the bed.
Drive-Ability
Old trucks are like old jeans, a bit worn but super comfortable.
This '77 is a straight shooter, no fake fronts and no apologies.
The trusty 350 comes to life but knowing we're on tires from 1993,
we do a super short loop, circle really, just to make sure she runs
and to check functionality. The brakes are very touchy and the
heater blower gave up the ghost, but all other functions, and there
aren't many, still work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
When a tomato or avocado is green, it's not ripe yet. It's not
ready. But this truck, with its green exterior is ripe and ready
for someone to take big bite and take this one to the check out
line. In fact, hit the express lane, (is that even a thing
anymore?), so you can purchase it before anyone else does. Sure,
it's got some bruising and imperfections, but as our parents would
say about that bruised apple, it won't hurt you.
