"The Datsun 620 was different and better than the others because
Datsun didn't have a lot of money back in those days, so they
reused as much as possible between the brand's sports cars and the
pickup. Datsun is remembered as an economy brand, but in reality it
was a racing brand. Drivers as notable as Paul Newman, who could
have afforded a Ferrari if he wanted one, were racing Datsuns on
the weekend." Pickuptrucktalk.com
For consignment, a 1976 Datsun 620 pickup showing 8,767 miles, but
the true miles are unknown. Lots of new parts and a new interior
were added to this California truck within the last three years. We
don't know about the east coast, but these mini trucks were all the
rage in the west back in the day, the perfect truck for pool
cleaners and surfers alike!
Exterior
Fantastically clean coverage by Sunset Orange paint sets this truck
ablaze in period style and its standard bed is adorned with tie
down hooks welded to the side and color matched to the body. The
ends were distinct, blending the petite Japanese styling of the
grille and dual headlights with the low tail lights in their own
bezels above the diminutive split chrome rear bumper. With some non
offensive patina, the white lettering on the tailgate is faded in
spots, but DATSUN is clearly expressed on the stamped panel with
two side latches rather a central lever. 15-inch Aluminum Slot
which have been refurbished and our consignor states are from
Japan, wear 215/65R15 tires with a mid 2022 date code and add a
touch of sportiness to this small truck. The bed shows some use but
the rest of the exterior is in great shape and we do not note any
glaring imperfections.
Interior
Black vinyl door cards fit the orange inner doors with a weave
patterned inner panel and the usual, simple hardware, with the
material pattern and color mirrored on the bench seat and
everything is tidy and clean, and less than three years old. A Z
badged steering wheel fronts the plastic bezel of the instrument
cluster, marred by a crack but otherwise original and clean
looking. A radio delete panel tops the vent levers while a center
console, rare according to our seller, takes in the tall, skinny
shifter you'd expect in a Japanese import of this vintage. Clean
black loop style carpet floods the floor topped by brown, Datsun
branded rubber mats that reflect the era perfectly. Up top, ivory
diamond patterned material make the headliner and black sun visor
are along for the ride.
Drivetrain
Tune up items along with a newer starter, battery, and alternator
accompany the 119ci SOHC inline four cylinder, rated at 110
horsepower and fueled via a 1-barrel carburetor. It's set into
motion with a 4-speed manual transmission sending power to the rear
axle with 4.38 gears.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath with minimal surface rust and some residual
about but no active leaks. Drum brakes are at all four wheels and
benefit from newer wheel cylinders, hoses, and lining while the
front end receives newer steering tie rod ends and sway bar
bushings to complement the torsion bar suspension in front and
fantastically clean leaf springs in back. The single exhaust enters
a stock style muffler, then splits to become two tailpipes with
chrome tips out back.
Drive-Ability
If Datsun cars were considered small back in the day, and they
were, imagine the cozy cabin of this compact truck which,
ironically, feels very car like. Meanwhile, the eager engine starts
right up and the little orange pickup tracks onto the test loop in
fine fashion providing adequate power, nice handling, and brakes we
note as a bit spongy. All the functions provided in this econo-box
with a bed work as they should and we look forward to meeting the
next owner of this fun classic. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
"I'll definitely buy another one if it would ever wear out," says
the ranch owner in the 1976 Datsun truck commercial about his 620
with over 100,000 miles. Yes, Japanese cars boasted dependability
and great gas mileage and Datsun's motto was "Datsun Saves". Well,
someone saved this one and we're sure glad they did. It's a
fantastic time capsule and a fairly uncommon classic.
