For Sale: 1972 Ford Mustang in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1

There is perhaps no car more emblematic of the end of the muscle car era than the 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1 fastback. Begun in 1969 as a means of enabling the Mustang to compete with GM's Camaros and Firebirds, the Mach 1 evolved as a powerful car and a big, bold statement over the course of its abbreviated five year run. 27,675 Mach I's were produced in 1972.

For consignment, a 1972 Mustang Mach 1 with a title verified 54,635 actual miles. This one owner, (technically two owners as our consingor's father titled it in his name for the consignor to keep insurance costs down), former racer is a five time trophy winner at Atco Raceway and most of the original parts, including wheels and exhaust, come with the car along with the window sticker, build sheet and deluxe Marti report. For the past few years, this generation of Mustangs have been on the uptick for collectability although there's always been an outlaw group of enthusiasts since the very start!

Exterior
Bright Blue covers the body of our car with the silver triple threat stripe which begins in the lower front quarter, rises to just above the front wheel well, then races rearward at the midline to the back of the car. The 1972 front grille may not have the inboard lights of the '69, but it does have rectangular markers with centerline trim corralled in the center along with the running horse. The true definition of a "pony" car, with its miles long hood area, and small gracefully descending rakish rear deck, here with dual NACA duct nostrils as the dominant features on the hood. Out back the honeycombed insert looms between 3 part tail lights and dual exhaust fit a contoured valance and the original valance comes with the car. 15-inch Cragar SS wheels carry 65 series tires. Imperfections include some chips, scratches, flex cracks and scuffs on the nose, discoloration and side swipe marks on the rear quarter, and some lost luster on the wheels.

Interior
Inside, high back white vinyl buckets showing some patina and wear are upfront, and a 2+2 fold down seat is in the rear. On the transmission tunnel is the T-styled automatic shift lever over black carpeting and just in front of a period clock. As we move our eye up the center stack we find the climate control panel topped by an AM/FM radio, (another is in the glovebox), and in front of the driver the instrumentation is deep set in molded and textured black plastic with black faces and white letters. The dash pad is textured and in nice shape too and the white door panels present with some patina and the typical age yellowing of the white. The headliner is high and tight, the trunk barren and clean with a space saver spare.

Drivetrain
Under the hood, a clean, original 351ci Cleveland V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and mated to an FMX 3-speed automatic that routes power to the Ford 9" in back with 3.50 gears and Equalock.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust, oil on the rear differential and pans don't deter from the overall good condition of the underside where the dual exhaust finds a pair of stock style muffler before making their way to the back. Power brakes are set up as front disc and rear drum and suspension consists of coil springs at the nose and leaf springs under the tail.

Drive-Ability
The trusty 351 comes to life without protest and emits a healthy exhaust note as we gallop this pony onto the test loop where it does everything well. Decent acceleration, straight tracking on the seven year old tires, and braking on demand. The bright interior is a nice diversion from the typical black and visibility is fine for a car with such an elongated C-pillar. All functions on board operate as they should and we return to the mall to continue our record of finding a new home for yet another '72 Mach 1. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

For the past few years, this generation of Mustangs have been on the uptick for collectability although there's always been an outlaw group of enthusiasts since the very start. The options and color on this car may make it one of less than 100 and the Marti Report will be delivered at time of sale. Great bones, great history, and a fairly uncommon spec makes this one a definite temporary resident at Classic Auto Mall!
