From the time it first rolled out, Ford's mega-sized Excursion was
a dominating presence. Bigger and taller than its competitors and
built on a truck-style chassis that equipped it with an elite
towing and payload capacity, it was a unique vehicle that combined
its expansive dimensions with surprisingly easy drivability and
four-wheel drive surefootedness. Flash forward a quarter century to
the present, and this 2000 Ford Excursion XLT 4x4 is an outstanding
representative of that one-of-a-kind model. Its Arizona Beige
Metallic paint has a nice, deep shine, and even under close
scrutiny, you'd be hard-pressed to find any dents or blemishes to
detract from its impact. Consistently fresh brightwork from front
to back enhances this unusually clean Ford's vibrant curb
appeal.
The cloth Parchment interior is in flat-out great shape, and as you
peer inside, its sheer volume becomes evident. This jumbo-sized SUV
can effortlessly accommodate eight passengers in comfort with its
three broad rows of seating. The condition of the seats themselves
is especially impressive. Ford's cloth upholstery has a reputation
for durability but not only do the front buckets and two rows of
bench seating still show only the slightest of wear, but there are
also no glaring stains or discolorations to be found. Walk around
to the rear and open the full-size doors that combine with a
drop-down tailgate, and you can also see just how much storage
space will be at your disposal, especially with the third-row bench
seat folded down. Up front, the dash area is another high point,
with its contrasting dark panel encircling clear factory gauges and
control knobs that look pretty much as they did from the start.
Needless to say, a sizable SUV built for action requires a potent
engine, and this Excursion has one. Its electronically
fuel-injected 6.8-liter V10 represented Ford's most powerful gas
option for the model at the time of its release, offering well over
400 lb.-ft. of torque and equipping it with a towing capacity of up
to 10,000 lbs. Like everything else on this Ford, it's in top-notch
working order and pairs with a 4-speed automatic transmission to
make for a versatile yet refined driving experience. And when a
sense of adventure grabs you, its four-wheel drive agility is
unleashed via an easily reachable electronic push-button on the
dash.
