"Brilliant new design strikes the modern note in streamlined
beauty. A wide, roomy car with a low center of gravity - curves
flowing fast from side to side. Distinctive front end, with
headlamps recessed in fender aprons, and modern lid type hood
hinged at the back. New all steel top sweeps back from the
windshield in an unbroken line. Interiors tailored to the minute.
And a slanting V-type windshield that opens in all closed body
types." From 1937 Ford sales brochure. Not a bad bit of prose!
For consignment, a 1937 Ford Deluxe 5 window coupe showing 4,498
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Purchased by our consignor
in 2018, the car had previously been restored around 1995, securing
an AACA National First Prize soon after.
Exterior
The spectacular dark paint is a two stage coating of Coach Maroon
and it's miles deep with a contrasting yellow pinstripe that
encircles the car and frames the rounded decklid. Leading the way
is a flawless zeppelin-like hood release and ornament over the
finely spaced vertical strakes of the pointed grille flanked by
teardrop headlights. Our showy wheels start with 16"-inch steel
wheels with polished and engraved wheel coverings wrapped in wide
white wall tires under arching fenders that connect to the running
board with its own side trim. The hood vents are also articulated
with the use of trim and appear in motion when sitting still,
especially when viewed from the side with the surging ornament and
rear leaning grille. Brightwork and paint are excellent and we
could not find any exterior imperfections on this award winning
car.
Interior
Our consignor spelled it out for us. "Covered in tan mohair, the
seats and door panels are in excellent condition. The headliner is
also an appropriate tan mohair material and the rear window is
complete with an operational retractable window shade. The
simulated woodgrain dash in art deco style has wonderful cream
colored Waltham gauges with fine pointers and art deco numbering
and graphics. Fronting the dash is the 3 spoke banjo type steering
wheel with its V8 emblazoned horn button and headlight control
switch". We'll add that ivory bakelite knobs occupy the dash and a
cream, vinyl floor covering surrounds the shifter. The trunk also
presents cleanly and houses a spare.
Drivetrain
The celebration of cleanliness continues in the engine back where
the flathead 221ci flathead V8 resides, fueled by a 2-barrel
carburetor and rated at 85 horsepower. It is backed by a 3-speed
manual transmission that routes power to the rear axle with 3.76
gears. The car has an electrical fuel pump and still runs on a 6
volt system.
Undercarriage
Our intrepid consignor strikes again. "Solid floor pans and frame
with an X section all in good condition. The body hangers, rockers,
and undersides of the running boards follow suit". We'll take it
from here. There's a single exhaust that flows through a stock
style muffler and exits out back, topped with a polished deflector.
Transverse leaf springs are utilized front and rear and drum brakes
are on all four corners.
Drive-Ability
True to the testimony, the car does in fact feel like stepping back
in time and does in fact start right up and essentially glides
across our flat tarmac with ease. The interior is comfortable and
warm and this smaller car feels stately as you gaze out over the
hood and point the torpedo to where you want to go. All available
functions operate as they should and we return this 1937 to the
mall where it will be privy to our 2025 care and marketing. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
