If you were Porsche and had just released one of the most
successful street sports cars, the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS,
what would you do for the next year? For U.S. drivers, you would
have gotten the short end of the stick and been relegated to CIS
fuel injection and stringent emissions on your 911, leading to cars
that were more fuel efficient but not as powerful or as quick. For
the rest of the world that wasn't being subjected to as harsh of
emissions regulations as the U.S., Porsche was able to offer a
higher powered and faster version: the Carrera 2.7 MFI. Producing
210hp from its 2.7L flat-six air cooled engine, paired with a
5-speed manual transmission, the 2.7 MFI was essentially a Touring
Carrera RS that had been dressed up in Porsche's new G-body
platform. With a curb weight identical to the outgoing 1973 Carrera
RS Touring with the same potent 2.7L flat six engine, the Carrera
2.7 MFI was Porsche's latest in street engineering.
The magic producing the 210hp from the 2.7L flat-six engine in the
rear of the 911 was down to the Bosch Mechanical Fuel Injection
system. With a unique sound, instantaneous throttle response, and
increased power, it was far superior in helping create a more
powerful engine than early computerized systems such as the K-Jet
systems on U.S. cars with more emissions equipment. With an
impressive 0-60 time, it was an exceptionally quick vehicle for its
time. A forbidden fruit to the United States, Porsche never
imported the cars during its production, spanning only three years
from 1974 to 1976. In 1974 and 1975 only an estimated 1,011 and 509
examples of the 2.7 MFI were built, establishing the car as a rare
and more modern version of the beloved Touring Carrera RS. However,
this 1976 Porsche Carrera 2.7 MFI was part of just one of 113 built
entirely for only the German market.
This 1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI was one of 113 examples built
for the German market. According to the Porsche Certificate of
Authenticity information, this car was optioned with Bitter
'Chocolate' Brown with a Cinnamon Leatherette interior. It also
included a front cassette compartment, rear wiper, manual
transmission, electric windows, and dunlop tires. It was also
reported that the polished lip Fuchs wheels were optioned at the
time of delivery. It was purchased by its first owner in Germany,
who enjoyed the car for many miles. In 1986, a Mr. Thomas Morton
approached Porsche's restoration department in Stuttgart, Germany..
Over 10 pages of documents from Porsche in German outline the
restoration process via an extensive list of components and
materials used, resulting in a fantastic restoration by the
factory. This total comprehensive process in 1986 cost
approximately $28,000, or DM60,906.79.
The 911 was then imported to the United States via a dealership,
who then sold the car to German racing driver and team owner Willi
Kauhsen, and the Bitter Chocolate Brown car found its way back to
Germany for several years. Kauhsen, famous for driving Porsche
917/10 amongst other legendary race cars, received a letter from
Porsche in 2009 with information similar to a Porsche Certificate
of Authenticity, whereas a Porsche COA was ordered in 2013. In 2018
the car was purchased by a Texas-based Porsche collector, who kept
the car in his possession for 7 years. During this time he added
just over 370 miles to the odometer, ensuring that the car was
regularly serviced properly and that any items needing addressing
were taken care of. During his ownership, the 911 received oil
changes, hydraulic fluid flushes, engine tuning, brake caliper
rebuild and restoration, and addressing minor fuel and brake fluid
leaks, and other various services.
Upon arrival at Canepa, the Carrera 2.7 MFI was thoroughly
inspected both cosmetically and mechanically through the "Canepa
Difference" process, determining what would be carried out next.
The car was sent to Canepa's award-winning detail department where
the car was raised up and washed by hand, ensuring that the
underside was spotless. After returning to the ground, the Bitter
'Chocolate" Brown paint was given a multi-foam pad polish to
enhance the luster of the paint. The leatherette interior, along
with plaid seat inserts, was given a similar level of attention.
Once its cosmetics were completed, it was brought inside to be
inspected mechanically and test driven, where it was given a clean
bill of health and was an excellent example of the 1976 Porsche 911
Carrera 2.7 MFI lineage.
With a heart of the legendary 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS, but with
updated styling and comfort upgrades from Porsche's next generation
G-body platform, the 1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI has a winning
combination of enjoyment, collectability, and style. Ready to be
enjoyed for another 50 years, celebrating its birthday in 2026,
this Carrera MFI sits amongst some of the finest air-cooled
Porsches ever made.
