"Look inside any 1950 Mercury and marvel at its roominess. There's
plenty of space for six BIG people. Notice the many extra quality
features like the new "SAFE-T-VUE" instrument panel, the foam
rubber cushioning in the seats, the rich floor carpeting, and the
striking trim details. Throughout, the 'better than ever' Mercury
is designed for beauty and comfort." From the 1950 Mercury sales
brochure.
For consignment, a 1950 Mercury eight 2-door sedan showing 7.300
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Here's a street rod version
with the big toothed grille, frenched headlights, and some sweet
faux side exhaust!
Exterior
Your Radio Flyer was red, and this lead sled is too, clinging to
the ground like a giant beetle in two stage Flame Red paint that is
as eye-catching as a fire engine. Some skillful pinstripe
flourishes show up on the red while chrome is the main source of
contrast, and it's most obvious up front where the big grille would
make a walrus jealous and the headlights wear a half chrome cover
that makes them extra reflective. A nosed hood sends your eyes to
the two part windshield surrounded by more polished metal in
A-pillar spotlights and door post side mirrors. In profile, the
wheel covers are ringed by a red rim and white walls frame it like
a portrait and faux side pipes complete the street rod decor, along
with Cadillac tail lights. Imperfections include some bubbling and
cracking on lower panels.
Interior
Forget what the brochure said about six big people, you're only
getting four in here but they will be a very happy four in this
spectacular cabin! It's all custom beginning with the white door
panels with red piping, followed by the front buckets in the same
pattern and looking clean. A custom center console cuts through the
middle, splitting the rear seats with lipstick red paint and red
seatbelts. Up front, this console houses the Vintage Air controller
and vent, a stylish tachometer, and a Kenwood controller. We note
two hairline cracks near the vent. A white steering wheel on a tilt
column fronts glossy red dash with a billet faced instrument
cluster and those gauges are gray faced units with red highlights
and a Kenwood AM/FM/CD player is centrally located. Plush red
carpet floods the floor, a white headliner with north to south
stitching is up above, and the trunk combines both red and white
for a cozy and clean finished storage area.
Drivetrain
Red valve covers top this showy engine, a 350ci V8 with a 4-barrel
carburetor over an Edelbrock intake and headers. It's mated to a
TH350 3-speed automatic transmission which routes power to the Dana
44 axle in back. The bay is dressed in glossy red panels and inner
fender wells and is ready for all 'hood up' shows!
Undercarriage
Clean and dry underneath with some polished pans under the engine
and some typical surface rust. The dual exhaust runs from the
headers into FlowMaster mufflers and exit via chrome pipes out
back. Power brakes are onboard with discs in front and drums in
back and suspension is coil spring and leaf springs, stem and stern
respectively.
Drive-Ability
The bright cabin provides a nice place from which to pilot this big
car, and the 350 rumbles to life after we prime the four barrel.
Then we add some red to the test loop with this Mercury as it
tracks true, turns well, and allows for good visibility for such a
big car as its sweeping front fender parries the air. The well
sorted sled scores 100 on the functionality exam, and all items
work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Some custom builds leave onlookers scratching their heads,
contemplating the decisions of the previous owner. But this one is
objectively beautiful and well done and as a result, is sure to
find a new home to park its big grille. If you're looking
specifically for a custom build and know the legend that is the old
Mercurys, this one should be in your sites.
