As the '70s were approaching, the American car-buying public began
to clamor for more spacious and stylish offerings, and Detroit
promptly accommodated that demand by putting more substantial and
outwardly luxurious choices on the menu, and this 1969 Ford
Thunderbird Landau ably demonstrates that aesthetic shift. This
vintage luxury cruiser sports factory-correct Black Jade paint
that's in good shape in its present form and could easily be taken
to the next level with a simple detailing session. Hideaway
headlights recessed into the broad front grille create an
outstanding view from the front, and as you circle this classic,
you can't help but notice its precise body panel alignment. It's
crowned by an alligator-textured vinyl top that not only
represented a "must have" styling option when this car was new but
also arrives in very nice condition.
This Thunderbird features a sharp-looking dark green vinyl
interior, with front buckets and a rear bench seat that sit above
well-fitted carpeting. The instrument cluster, like pretty much
everything inside the doors, remains in its factory configuration
and houses clear, functional gauges, with a straight, unwarped dash
pad just above. The original climate control knobs are in good
shape, and while the air conditioning system isn't blowing as cold
as it could, all the components are in place, so that should be a
relatively minor fix. At the center of the dash, the original
Philco AM radio fires up on cue to provide just the right
period-correct audio experience.
For some classic car enthusiasts, the temptation to modify a
drivetrain stems from the desire to amp up the available power from
its factory capabilities, but this classic Ford isn't likely to
prompt such a temptation. Its 429-cubic-inch Thunder Jet V8 packed
360 horsepower and an unusually high 480 lb.-ft. of torque from the
start, so when you step on the accelerator, prepare to be pinned
back against the driver's seat. Equipped with a Holley 4-barrel
carburetor, the potent engine pairs with a smooth-shifting 3-speed
automatic C6 transmission. The featured power steering is
impressively smooth, with no excessive play, and the car tracks
nice and straight.
