"Pardon us while we slip into" underscores an illustration of four
ladies covered by a folding screen on the print ad. We see heels
and bare shoulders, and that's about it. "Something comfortable"
then captions the women inside the Polara. The ad continues, "The
something comfortable in this case is a 1963 Dodge Polara 4 door
hardtop. It's not the clinging sort of comfortable either; you
might say that it's more like housecoat comfortable." The ad goes
on to talk about the features for the "male side" including engine
size and maintenance routines.
For consignment, a 1963 Dodge Polara 4 door sedan with a title
verified 98,157 actual miles. This one combines original features
and a laundry list of upgrades that have been added in the past few
years, including a Holley Sniper EFI kit, Bluetooth radio,
suspension, and exhaust.
Exterior
Single stage Light Tan covers the car with a perfectly normal hue
for '63, here topped by Medium Tan Metallic on the roof, which the
ad points out, "sweeps straight back instead of sloping off, plenty
of headroom for front and rear seat passengers." It features a
slight overhang over the rear window then right angles take over
from there with a flat deck lid dropping straight over the tail, an
attractive arrangement of brake and reverse lights over a laser
straight bumper. Up front is Dodge's telltale diagonal dual
headlight arrangement and on the side, a bold trim piece that
slants downward from stem to stern to indicate motion, then drops
in a hockey stick configuration. 15-inch Cragar SS wheels and
tinted windows add a modern spark to this once pedestrian minded
four door. Imperfections include quite a bit of bubbling, surface
rust, chips, and flaking filler.
Interior
Taupe door panels are brightened by a reflected trim insert with
subtle lined stamping, surrounded by a bright time ring and lower
line and all four doors present nicely. Taupe vinyl continues to
the bench seat up front where it frames cloth inserts and both
cloth and vinyl show wear on the driver's side, a stain on the
passenger seat, though fine condition is found on the rear bench.
Keeping the two tone theme is the steering wheel, cream over taupe
and a full horn ring, fronting a spectacular metal instrument
cluster that might have inspired the robot's design from Lost in
Space. The pushbutton transmission is mirrored by push button vent
controls and varying patterns are etched into the panels for visual
interest under a horizontal speedometer. A Sony AM/FM radio with
Bluetooth is tied to new speakers and a wide, glossy dash presents
to the passenger. The Sniper screen rests in the added console
cupholder over brown carpet. The perforated headliner is intact and
the trunk wears a plaid vinyl mat and houses a covered spare.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 318ci V8 now featuring a Holley Sniper fuel
injection system and backed by an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed
automatic transmission routing power to the 8 inch rear. The bay
is a mix of original parts and also benefits from a newer fuel pump
and alternator.
Undercarriage
We find clean and dry conditions underneath where the dual exhaust
runs into shiny stock style mufflers before exiting under the car
through downturned steel tips. Wilwood disc brakes, power assisted,
are a nice update up front while power drums back up things in the
rear. Suspension consists of torsion bars up front and leaf springs
in back. Power steering is also onboard.
Drive-Ability
The 318 starts up and emits a nice exhaust note, but it also emits
a valve tap which shortens our test run. We note the fuel gauge and
temperature gauge are not working but all other functions afforded
the driver operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
The swinging Sixties played a role in advertising everything at the
time, and a pedestrian four door commuter like the Polara was not
immune! "Pick a size. Pick a Price. Pick a Dodge," was the small
print in the magazine ad which featured a car just like this one,
somehow transforming its straight lines to something voluptuous and
desirable. No matter how you slice it, it's a great looking Mopar
and ready for a new partner!
