In 1963, GM introduced an internal ban on racing and high-performance development projects. Naturally, nearly every division found loopholes in the ruling and/or blatantly ignored it in the name of chasing more race wins and greater sales. Pontiac's engineers, for example, discovered rules against certain engine displacements being fitted in their smaller cars could be circumvented by making the larger engines optional. Soon thereafter, the revolutionary GTO was born as an option package for the Tempest LeMans.

Offered for $295 (over $3,000 today), the GTO package included a 389ci V8 offering 325hp, a heavier duty suspension, and everything else necessary to turn the car into a performance machine. Of course, one could additionally specify an even more powerful variant of the motor (348hp), a limited-slip differential, and more to further enhance performance. Initial sales estimates anticipated 5,000 units would be sold - by the end of the model year, over 32,450 were sold, bringing a new era of American performance into focus. Today, the first GTO is lauded as being the car that set off the "muscle car" craze in the sixties and remains a fine choice for driving enthusiasts.

The incredible 1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible featured here is finished in stunning Nocturne Blue over a Parchment (White) interior with an Ivory power convertible top. This investment-grade GTO is an original documented Tri-Power example and, as documented by Pontiac Historical Society, was fitted with nearly every available option and accessory, with features including a power driver's seat, power windows, and much more. Subject to a frame off, no-expense-spared show-quality restoration, this is the perfect early Pontiac GTO for any premier collection. The quality and detail of the restoration is extraordinary, easily making this one of the best examples we've ever come across! Offered to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires to own one of the very best at an investment price!
