Finished in its factory-appointed Code 115 Blue Metallic over a
crisp White vinyl interior, this stunning 1972 Datsun 240Z Coupe
represents the pinnacle of Japan's early sports car revolution. The
Datsun 240Z-known as the "Fairlady Z" in its home market-was
introduced to the U.S. in 1970 and immediately redefined what
enthusiasts could expect from an affordable sports car. Developed
under the guidance of Yutaka Katayama ("Mr. K"), the 240Z was
designed to rival European marques like Jaguar and Porsche but with
Japanese reliability and value. Its sleek, aerodynamic body,
independent suspension, and spirited inline-six engine made it an
instant success, establishing the Z-car as a cultural icon and a
cornerstone of Nissan's global reputation. By 1972, the 240Z had
firmly secured its place as one of the most desirable and
accessible sports cars of its era.
This example is a four-owner car from new, benefiting from
extensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration between 2015 and
2019. It retains its original, numbers-matching engine mated to the
factory 4-speed manual transmission, ensuring authenticity and a
true connection to the car's heritage. Mechanical features include
power front disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, and the
signature inline six-cylinder engine that delivers the smooth,
eager performance that made the Z legendary!
Additional details showcase both form and function: 14-inch wheels
with specialty Z hubcaps, front and rear bumper guards, rear
defroster, and even the under-hood service light, a rare original
detail seldom seen today. This special 240Z sold new in January
1972 to its original owner, Gilbert Burnett, stationed at the
Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He
would maintain ownership of his cherished sportscar until 2010. It
would then be donated to charity. Adding to its unique story, this
Z transferred to its second North Carolina owner who acquired it
through a Wheels4Hope charity raffle in October 2010 with 61,264
miles showing on the odometer, then receiving a complete mechanical
refresh ensuring the car was serviced back to drivable standards
before its later full restoration.
The third owner from Southern Pines, North Carolina would take
possession in October 2015 with 64,902 miles and commence a full
restoration both the exterior and interior, along with a
comprehensive mechanical service throughout his ownership until
2019. This included the additional interior sound deadening
material and upgrade to a Kenwood audio system including modern
speakers. It would then travel to Hilton Head Island, South
Carolina and become a fair-weather winter toy with the fourth
owner.
Upon arrival to the St. Louis Car Museum & Sales, it would be
treated to a full service to include resealed carburetors with new
ZT nozzles, new needles/seats, & fresh gaskets; new Pertonix
ignition system and coil; fresh spark plugs/ plug wires; fresh
timing chain set/front main seal; complete valve adjustment with
new valve cover gasket, engine oil/filter, air filter, new battery,
and new fuel pump with auxiliary electric backup.
It comes complete with detailed ownership history along with
service records dating back to 1976 inside a binder, original
owner's manual, warranty booklet with factory warranty card,
consumer inserts, and spare tire with jack tools. Carefully
preserved and beautifully presented with only 65,451 miles showing
on the odometer, this 1972 Datsun 240Z embodies the timeless
balance of performance, design, and heritage that continues to
define the Z legacy. A landmark in sports car history, it's ready
to be appreciated by collectors and drivers alike who recognize the
enduring appeal of the original Japanese icon.
