"Thunk! The door. Click! The seat belt. These are the sounds of you
climbing into the driver's seat of your sleek SS396 and heading for
the highway. Every inch excitement, from the black accented grille
and bulging scoop styled hood to the red stripe tires. '67 SS 396,
the Quick Size Chevelle for the driving man!" From a '67 print
ad.
For consignment, a 1967 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle SS 396 hardtop
showing 95,925 miles, but the true miles are unknown. The recipient
of a frame off restoration five years ago, every bit of this car
was restored or refreshed including the undercarriage and engine
bay. A true 138 code car, no expense was spared in making this one
a stunner and a runner!
Exterior
Two stage Bolero Red paint now covers the long panels of this
A-body, the fascia of which seems to lunge forward in anticipation
as the black paneled back stands poised, ready to hit the
afterburners. It takes on a sport persona with the hood bulges and
simulated vents, and its redline tires turn a pedestrian commuter
car into a red light warrior. Those 15-inch wheels carry the proper
hubcaps, framed by black steel and visually connected with the
ribbed rocker panel that touches the arch trim. The pointed tail
lights are mirrored by the buttresses that hug the rear window and
the chrome bumper picks up on the polished window trim, all in a
spectacular, clean design enhanced by near perfect red paint. The
only imperfection we find in fact, is a door edge chip.
Interior
If you were expecting black, the white interior will hit like a
sudden snow squall, then have you asking for more! It starts with
smartly appointed door panels in stitch patterned vinyl complete
with rectangular metal cabochons and like a missing tile on the
ceiling, we note one piece missing on the passenger side as both
doors otherwise present cleanly. It's on to the seats that show no
wear or compression, buckets in front and a bench in back,
cabochons intact. A black steering wheel fronts the horizontal
displays of the dash, clean lines and clean condition with polished
metals backing the AM/FM radio over a triple gauge pod added below.
Let your eyes drop a few inches to find the chrome ringed clock in
the center console, then the chrome knobbed shifter in stunning
black base, all over loop carpet and Chevelle carpeted mats. The
white headliner and visors above are consistent with the condition
of the car and the trunk also presents are showroom fresh.
Drivetrain
The attention to detail continues in the bay where a spotless 454ci
V8 resides with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor over an Edelbrock
intake delivering fuel to the monster engine, backed here by a
Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission. The ponies are then
delivered to the 12 bolt in back with 3.31 gears and Positraction
in a 1968 axle assembly. Yes, you could eat off of this engine!
Undercarriage
They told us it was clean under here and they weren't kidding and
the attention continues to the undercarriage is obvious. As far as
componentry, we have power disc brakes in front and drums in the
back, coil springs front and rear with a 4 link in the back, and
dual exhaust that runs through Thrush mufflers before dumping
through clean steel pipes in back. If you ate off the engine, you
can dessert down here!
Drive-Ability
Like the rubber tree ant, we have high hopes for this one and the
pleasing exhaust note leads us to the test loop where the car
delivers on all fronts. Fantastic power, straight tracking, tight
steering, and a pleasant cabin from which to pilot it all. And the
cherry on top of this red flyer is the fact that all functions
operate just as they should, and we circle back to the mall to find
a nice spotlight to park this car under. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
If this car wasn't such a pleasure to drive, we'd think about
trailering it to the local car show just to keep it clean! Yeah,
it's one of those! This is a stunning restoration and we already
envy the new owner, and s/he hasn't even stepped up yet. We'll have
the red carpet ready for you, all you have to do is make the
call.
