The first generation Pinzgauers were produced in the 70's and are
regarded as some of the most capable all terrain vehicles ever
produced, with a center tube chassis and a transaxle that keeps the
center of gravity low. The K designation applies to 5 door station
wagons, but Pinzgauers 6x6 712's were also configured as soft top
carriers, flat top carriers, crew cab pickup, and ambulance.
For consignment, a 1977 Steyr Puch Pinzgauer 712k with a title
verified 27,817 actual miles, recorded as 44,786 kilometers. This
example was refurbished in 1994 and comes to you with operating
instructions, an Austrian diagram showing the '94 updates, and
receipts for work done by Pinzgauer experts during the consignor's
ownership.
Exterior
Light a breadbox on six wheels, the Pinzgauer is a rolling clinic
of right angles with long, riveted steel panels in Olive Drab and a
perfectly vertical, tall windshield. We do find some rounded edges
in the corners of the rear door's windows where G-wagon type tail
light ride low with a tubular bumper hugging the edge. From the
side, the height is evident and the body perches high over the
wheels, all six of the 15-inch five lug steel wheels with 245/75R15
tires all terrain tires with an early 2019 date code. Up top, there
are a plethora of tie downs and a circular hatch in front while
side mirrors extend outward, adding to the overall width. There are
no dents and the paint has an appropriate aged patina that looks
battle ready.
Interior
Olive green dominates the interior where things are definitely
utilitarian, starting in the back with various shelves and storage
units, a gray cloth wall covering, pegboard like inserts and
headliner, equipment, and a couple of green vinyl bucket seats. Two
more buckets are up front and flank the engine cover while a simple
three spoke steering wheel presents to the driver and fronts a
typically simple dashboard with a series of illustrated indicator
lights over a speedometer and gas gauge. A number of levers reside
in the center which we translate as axle drive, rear lock, and
front lock, but your instruction manual will be helpful here. Steel
plates reside on the floor along with a shifter while the wall,
ceiling, and inner doors are barren steel.
Drivetrain
Between the front occupants lives an air cooled 152.3ci inline four
cylinder, rated at 87 horsepower and fueled by a 1-barrel
carburetor. There's a 5-speed manual and a 2-speed transfer case
with 2.85 gears in each axle.
Undercarriage
Typical surface rust and patina is found underneath but dry
conditions are noted. Power drum brakes are supplied to each wheel
and a single exhaust and stock style muffler are onboard.
Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in
the back.
Drive-Ability
We thumb through the manual and find our way onto the test loop,
looking for some Humvees to climb, but all we find is flat terrain.
The driving experience is unique and the shock factor of seeing one
of these on the street, we imagine, would be over the top. We find
all functional items on this low mileage military unit to be in
working order and we return to the mall to find a room big enough
to house it. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Think of it as a Glock on wheels, it's not the prettiest thing out
there, kind of boxy, but built by Austrians to be reliable,
capable, safe, and functional. Given the overlanding craze right
now, our imagination went to outfitting this thing like a camper,
but it could also be the ultimate winter ride or off road
adventurer as is. And it will be a big hit at military truck shows
or any car show for that matter!
