2008 Ford Crown Victoria P71 Police Interceptor Sedan
"The best cop car ever turned 40. The Ford Crown Victoria,
originally introduced in 1983, was recently recognized as the "Best
Police Cruiser of All Time". The vehicle's performance,
reliability, and cost were factors that made the vehicle the leader
of the pack. For decades, the low cost Crown Victoria provided
police departments with value that exceeds that of modern cruisers.
But industry trends forced the Crown Victoria, like other
affordable cars, into extinction." Forbes Magazine, Sept. 2023
For consignment, a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria P71 Police Interceptor
sedan with a title verified 81,602 actual miles and as a car never
used for patrol, showing just 322 idle hours on the digital gauge.
Don't let the grandfatherly appearance fool you, this is a potent
Panther platform car with a laundry list of modifications to make
it faster, stronger, and ready for duty.
Exterior
This is not a repaint of a black and white picked up at auction,
this car was born with its two stage Silver Birch Metallic and
looking very much like the Sunday church car with wheel covers over
the 17-inch steelies wearing police spec 235/55R17 tires with a
late 2020 date code and the ability to tolerate 168 mph! Yes, the
outside is standard Crown Victoria, even donning a Crown Victoria
badge in back in lieu of a Police Interceptor tag. The only clue,
and you'd have to be really quick to catch it, is an antennae mount
on the roof as CVPI cars were specially wired in the ceiling to
accommodate communication and light apparatus. A small area of
bubbling is the only imperfection on this amazing sleeper.
Interior
You'd expect plastic seats in back, a divider, and a well used
metal mounting bracket in front, but as this car was intended for
personal use by a police chief, it lacks all of those things.
Instead, you have clean black plastic door panels that lead to
charcoal gray cloth bucket seats with armrests and a stand cloth
bench in back, and they all present cleanly. All standard up front
beginning with the steering wheel, column shifter, and an
instrument cluster that includes a tachometer. A plain AM/FM/CD
radio in central along with the A/C panel while low pile black
carpet dresses the floor. There is an extra dome light on the
ceiling mounted on the charcoal headliner, and the trunk is
finished with cloth lined plastic panels and is clean.
Drivetrain
On to the mechanics which make this car special. Under the hood is
a 4.6 liter SOHC V8 putting out 250 horsepower. This horsepower was
first achieved in 2004, up from 239, when the Crown Vic received
some tuning influence and the intake of the civilian based hot rod,
the Marauder. For the first year, the CVPI can utilize FlexFuel and
do so through electronic fuel injection. It's backed by a 4R70W
4-speed automatic transmission sending power the Ford 8" in back
with 3.55 gears. An oil cooler, transmission oil cooler, and 200
amp alternator are all part of the CVPI package.
Undercarriage
An aluminum driveshaft, dual exhaust, heavy duty shock absorbers,
stabilizer bars, and HD suspension, all part of the package. Power
disc brakes are on all four wheels and the primary suspension
components include coil springs front and rear with a 4 link in
back. Dual exhaust hits an H-pipe before flowing through their
original mufflers exiting "under cover" behind the rear bumper.
Overall, it's clean and dry underneath with all the typical surface
rust we'd expect to see.
Drive-Ability
From a purely aesthetic perspective, it feels like any other Crown
Victoria of the era. Hit the road, however, and the extra power,
stiffness, and acceleration become immediately apparent. This Crown
Victoria is a misbehaving royal, but does so without fanfare. Just
good, clean fun behind the wheel. As a pampered example, all
available functions operate as intended and we end our shift and
return to the mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Talk about a sleeper! If you wanted all the advantages of a law
enforcement car but didn't want the flashy paint, special cabin
equipment, or thousands of idle hours, this is the ultimate
purchase. And you wouldn't be alone as there are CVPI clubs and
gatherings, as this one would probably not draw much attention at a
regular car show. We're sending out an APB to all you Crown Vic
enthusiasts and as they say in the field, step it up if you want in
on this one!
